Giovanni Soldini and Maserati ready for a great new challenge, a race against time.
New Record to beat: New York to San Francisco, 13,225 miles, fully crewed.
Expected departure: second half of December 2012.
Giovanni Soldini and Maserati announce a great new challenge, a race against the clock.
The next goal of Maserati is to beat the speed record on the historic ‘Golden Route’ New York to San Francisco, via Cape Horn. (Record monitored by the World Sailing Speed Record Council). 13,225 nautical miles along the old clipper route, the current record was set 1998 by Yves Parlier onboard Aquitaine Innovations (monohull record). Time to beat; 57 days, 3 hours, 2 minutes.
Soldini and Maserati will face two oceans; the Atlantic and the Pacific. Nearly two months at sea with an International crew of expert sailors from around the world including, Italy, France, Spain, USA and China.
Departing from La Spezia at the beginning of October, Soldini and his team arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, just a few days ago. It is here they will prepare Maserati for the record attempt, work includes changing the stays and the sails.
At the beginning of December Maserati and the crew will move to New York where they will start monitoring the weather forecasts in order to leave in the best possible weather conditions. The departure will take place from 15th December onwards.
