STV Unicorn Arrives at Dennis Conner's North Cove
Do you ever dream about hoping on a tall ship and running away to sea? In the great
age of sail of the 1800s, people used to do this. Nowadays, you would hop on an
airplane and fly to Alaska and join the fishing fleet.
But square rigged ships still spark a romantic chord in people. And whenever another
great vessel pulls in to Dennis Conner's North Cove, you see people in suits staring
longingly from the searail.
This weekend, the sail training vessel "Unicorn" is docked at North Cove. She is
118 feet long and was built in 1947 under the name "Deo Volente I."
Today, Unicorn is owned by the Sisters Under Sail Program. She is run by an all-female
crew and provides sail training to girls aged 12 to 17. She is the only all-female
crewed tall ship in the country. If you are in the press, there is probably a
good feature story in here somewhere.
Unicorn sails along the East Coast as well as New England, the Canadian Maritimes,
Great Lakes, Florida Coast and the Caribbean.
She will be berthed at North Cove until Monday so please come down to North Cove
this weekend. Take a look at his magnificent vessel (along with others in the
marina) and learn more about her sailing adventures.
