Corporate Sailing League Gets Underway in NY Harbor

The new Corporate Sailing League got underway in NY Harbor on Thursday evening with Gerson Lehrman finishing first after 3 races. Cravath Swaine & Moore was in second and Merrill Lynch was in third.

Corporate teams in the sailing league compete every Thursday for the next six weeks. The teams are made up of experienced and novice sailors. They sail on J/24 class sailboats which are owned by Manhattan Sailing Club. The club is located at Dennis Conner's North Cove in front of the World Financial center in Battery Park City, Lower Manhattan.

Racing starts each evening at 6:45 p.m. and the course is set around the club's floating clubhouse anchored north of Ellis Island.

In addition to the team of sailors, corporations can send a spectator team out to the floating clubhouse to watch the action. On the first night of this new league, Merrill Lynch & Gerson Lehrman both had strong and vocal cheering sections.

To make the action exciting for the spectators, an announcer describes the course and gives a play-by-play narrative as the race unfolds.

Spectating from the clubhouse was so popular this first week that the clubhouse reached its capacity of 149 people. Going forward, corporate teams will have to make launch reservations to ensure their spectators can get out to watch the action and cheer for their teams.

A total of 3 races were held the first evening. Merrill Lynch won the first race, followed by victories by Gerson Lehrman and Cravath Swaine & Moore. With the first week under their belts, the corporate teams are likely to be more competitive in week 2.

If your company would like to enter the Corporate Sailing League, please contact Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh at mike@myc.org [mailto:mike@myc.org].

Press or media interested in covering this great summer story are invited out to watch the races from the floating clubhouse. Photographers and video crews will be provided with a dedicated photo boat.

There will also be two special one day industry regattas later this summer. These are the 8th Annual Hedge Fund Regatta on Monday, August 22 and the First Law Regatta on Monday, August 15. Both of these regattas raise money for charity. Information about either event is available upon request. Just reply to this email.
