Manhattan Sailing Club
Greetings from the Commodore
Welcome to our club's Silver Jubilee!
It's time to celebrate 25 years of sailing
history. The next year will feature lots of fun and exciting events. Please get
involved in the planning and help make this the greatest year ever. November and
December are strategic months when we think about the future.
After New Years, we only have a short time to make everything happen. Before you
know it, April will be here and we start with the Spring Launching. Then comes
the Sailors Ball and soon we will all be standing on the docks for the Silver Jubilee
Commissioning Ceremony!

Stay in touch with your fellow members over the winter. The club has opened its
"Champagne Bar" on the floating clubhouse which is docked at North Cove. There
will be a "Member Night" once per week. Make this part of your routine. Also,
buy your tickets soon for the Annual Dinner. Last year it was oversubscribed so
don't miss out.
Volunteers are needed to help create our club's Holiday Train Garden. We will also
be celebrating our Silver Jubilee with a special "Moet & Chandon" New Year's Eve
Party. Then there will be two Caribbean Regattas, one in the BVIs and another
in the Grenadines. With so much happening, here's our club newsletter which will
tell you more.

Champagne Bar Now Open!
Our club's "Champagne Bar" is now open. During the winter, our clubhouse is docked
on the south side of North Cove. The Champagne Bar is open one night a week for
a special "Member Night." This is a great opportunity to come down, see other
members and develop more sailing connections next season. The clubhouse will be
open from 6 to 9 p.m. on these dates (mark your schedule):
Tuesday, Nov. 22
Wednesday, Nov. 30
(closed Wed. Dec. 7 for the Annual Dinner)
Wednesday, Dec. 14
Wednesday, Dec. 21
(closed Wed. Dec. 28 for holiday break)
New Years Eve Party, Sat. Dec. 31
Our club's Champagne Bar is elegant with leather chairs and sailing photographs.
There is plenty of heat to keep you warm. Moet & Chandon champagne is served
by the glass or bottle. What better way to begin a winter evening than with a champagne
toast? Treat yourself once per week. It will improve your spirit and make the
holiday season more festive. Other wines, beers and liquors are also available.
You can come down to the club by yourself or bring friends and co-workers. Everyone
will be impressed with the Champagne Bar. The new centerpiece is a model of our
flagship America's Cup 12 Meter "America II."
Also, if your company is looking for a location for a holiday party, please call
Bomer in the office at 212-786-3323.
Annual Dinner - Wed. Dec. 7
Tickets are on sale now for the Annual Dinner to start our Silver Jubilee!
The Annual Dinner has a long tradition at our club. We share this dinner once every
Holiday Season to reminisce about the great year of sailing. The dinner is held
at the stately Down Town Association in Lower Manhattan. This remarkable venue
is always decorated for the holidays.
The Silver Jubilee Annual Dinner will be Wednesday, December 7. The evening begins
with cocktails at 6 p.m. in the Main Bar. Entries for the Annual Photo Contest
will be on display and members can vote for "Picture of the Year." At 7:30 p.m.,
members walk up the grand staircase to the Wainwright Room for a three-course dinner.
tables seat 10 and many of the racing teams have their own tables.
This year, to celebrate the great members who supported America II in her hour of
need, the 12 Meter Syndicate is inviting all "Friends of America II" to join the
12 Meter table.
A slide show is presented which covers many of the year highlights. If you have
a special photo you would like included in the slide show, please email it to bomer@myc.org
[mailto:bomer@myc.org]. Maybe you have a picture of a favorite Fleet Captain sail
or maybe it's a picture of your team winning a race. Please send it in so we can
try to include it.
After the slide show, the racing trophies will be presented to many of our lucky
teams. This year, there will be trophies for the top 3 teams in both the Gold
and Silver fleets. There will also be trophies for the top Fleet Captains and special
honors like the Sportsmanship Award, Jon Overton Memorial and the Commodore's Award.
After dinner ends, members usually continue the celebration by traveling to Bubble
Lounge in Tribeca.
Don't miss this grand evening of celebration. Buy your tickets today. Last year,
there was a record turn out and the dinner was oversubscribed. Don't wait any longer.
Two De Caribbean Regattas this Winter
"De Caribbean Regatta" is the annual winter tradition when members fly to the Caribbean
for one week of sailing vacation on a beautiful charter boat.
Why go to the Caribbean? Well, when it's cold and icy in the city, wouldn't you
rather be sailing in turquoise waters, walking barefoot on white sand beaches and
sunbathing in the tropical sun?
The club has already announced the first regatta, to the British Virgin Islands
from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4. Registration is already underway on the website. Now,
the club is announcing a second regatta. This will be to the Grenadines from March
10-17.
The BVI regatta is the place for new sailors to first experience the Caribbean.
This is considered the best cruising grounds in the world. You will visit some
incredible islands and the trip will be your best vacation ever. It will change
your life.
More experienced Caribbean sailors, who wish to spread their wings and take on a
larger challenge, can sign up for the Grenadines trip. The distances between islands
is larger, there is less creature comfort and the stops are less developed.
Last year, De Caribbean Regatta was the largest ever. 25 boats and 200 members
and guests participated! The previous record was 18 boats. This year, we expect
about 10 to 15 boats for the BVI trip and 4 to 6 boats for the Grenadine trip. So
take a look at the website to find out more. Go to the boat assignment page and
see the skippers and which boats still have room.
You deserve a warm vacation this winter! What better way to spend a week than sailing
from island to island every morning, sunbathing, snorkeling and reading in the afternoon
followed by a great social event every evening? Make you sailing dreams come true.
Sign up today!
New Year's Eve on the Honorable William Wall
What are you doing New Year's Eve? This year, the club will organize it's first
New Year's Eve party. Have you ever enjoyed a Full Moon Party at the club? Well,
the New Year's Eve party promises to be even more fun. To celebrate our Silver
Jubilee, there will be Moet & Chandon champagne served all night long.
The celebration will be on two levels. Downstairs will be for sophisticated and
stylish lounging, conversation and food. Upstairs will be dancing and to ring
in the New Year. More details will be published on the club website soon.
Volunteers Needed for Holiday Train Garden
Our club helps to create a great holiday tradition for all kids (young and old).
This is the "Holiday Train Garden." We convert the upper deck of our clubhouse
into a winter wonderland. Last year, there were up to 7 Lionel gauge trains running
at the same time. The Train Garden memorizes kids and creates special memories
of the holiday season. It is organized by Project City Kids and members of our
club volunteer to build and operate the trains.
Dennis Conner International Yacht Club Challenge to Return for Silver Jubilee
One of the great events organized by our club is the Dennis Conner International
Yacht Club Challenge. This is an amateur regatta designed to promote international
goodwill through friendly competition. Teams form all over the world fly to our
city and race in the harbor.
The regatta was last held in August 2010. We took this past year off in order to
focus energies on building a really great event to celebrate our Silver Jubilee.
