Manhattan Sailing Club December 2011 Newsletter
Holiday Greetings from the Commodore
It was a great Annual Dinner last week and the most boisterous ever! More than
170 members attended. Cognratulations to all those who received prizes and recognitions.
Our Silver Jubilee Season has begun!
This Friday, we open the Holiday Train Garden on the upper deck of our floating
clubhouse at North Cove. All kids young and old are invited and encouraged to come
down to feel a little holiday magic. I will be there and hope you will too.
In just a few short weeks, many members fly down to the British Virgin Islands for
a week of sailing in the heart of the winter. You can still join them and spend
a week in the warm sunshine, running on white sand beaches and sailing across turquoise
waters powered by Caribbean winds.
To all of our international friends, we hope to see you in NYC next August for the
5th Dennis Conner International Yacht Club Challenge.

Holiday Train Garden Opens this Friday!
It's rare for kids in New York City to grow up with an electric train set. Space
is at a premium. So Project City Kids does something about it. They create a huge
train garden which all kids can come see.
The Train Garden opens this Friday and will stay open until Dec. 24. Weekday hours
are 5 to 8 p.m. and weekend hours are noon to 7 p.m. It's free to all kids. Just
come down to the Honorable William Wall, our floating clubhouse docked at North
Cove, and walk up to the second floor. There will be up to seven Lionel gauge trains
running at the same time! Help spread the world by telling your friends.
Thanks to our chief engineer Steve Norring for doing the lionshare of the work to
build out the train garden. hHe was also assisted by more than 20 volunteers.
Thank you all for making the holiday a little more special for all the kids this
year.
New Year's Eve Party Tickets on Sale Now
We are starting a new tradition for the Silver Jubilee - a New year's Eve Party
at the Champagne Bar on our floating clubhouse.
And just before De Caribbean Regatta (there is still time to sign up if you would
like to go sailing in a warm spot this winter), the club will begin offering "Flights
of Rum."
Big Turn Out at Annual Dinner
170 members attended the Annual Dinner on Dec. 7, making it one of the largest dinners
in the history of the club - a great start to our Silver Jubilee Year.
The major awards presented were as follows:
Commodore's Award - Presented to all the "Friends of America II." These were the
generous members who donated to help replace the mast on our flagship, America's
Cup 12 Meter "America II." The support of the Friends of America II made it possible
to get her sailing again this year. More than 160 members helped raise more than
$40,000. This was the most significant event at the club this season. Traditionally,
the Commodore's Award is presented to an individual but because of this unique circumstance,
the prize was presented to the entire group of "Friends if America II."
Jon Overton Memorial Award - Presented to Joe DiFranks and Randy Lewis for the
member who has contributed the most to their fellow member. Joe and Randy were
recognized for their many years of certifying new skippers at the club. Together,
they have devoted untold weekend mornings, afternoons and evenings to the certification
process and helping members make the great step towards Skipper Privileges.
Sportsmanship Award - Presented to Mary Gardiner who participated in many sailing
races this summer from weekly racing to Lucky Dog Races and who, through her smile
and energy, has helped raise the level of the club.

De Caribbean Regattas
It's never too late to decide "I want to join De Caribbean Regatta this winter."
So far, it looks like 14 boats will get filled for the BVI regatta at the end of
January. But there are still more skippers interested in going. So if you want
to sail for a week in the warm turquoise waters of the Caribbean, sign up. This
will be the best vacation of your life.
The club has already announced the first regatta, to the British Virgin Islands
from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4. Registration is underway on the website. Now, the club
is announcing a second regatta. This will be to the Grenadines from March 10-17.
