Dear Members - The Silver Jubilee Season has started off with many exciting things!

I just wanted joined the picture. The piece will air on TV soon. Matt Miller of
Bloomberg TV (Rewind with Matt Miller) was also down at the club to go sailing.
Now's the time for you to come down to the club as well! Make a reservation and
ride out on the launch to the Honorable William Wall, reserve a spot in the Fleet
Captain Program or just come down and hang out on the docks. If you want to take

Silver Jubilee Week at the Sailing Club!
Silver Jubilee Week at Manhattan Sailing Club will be Monday, July 2 to Saturday,
July 7.
July 4th falls on Wednesday this year so it will be a bye week between the spring
and summer racing series. Everyone in the city will be in a relaxed and festive
mood so it's time to kick your summer into high gear by coming down to the sailing
club.
Monday evening will start the celebration with a Full Moon Party. This is the event
which made our clubhouse famous. We are going back to our roots and giving all attendees
a special commemorative Silver Jubilee Full Moon T-Shirt. There will also be a BBQ
dinner served and good old-fashioned rock n roll music with modern music too. You
can get tickets now at our website at
http://www.myc.org/Events/full_moon_party.htm
For the entire week, we will be celebrating at the docks by offering two-for-one
Mt Gay Rum and tonics, our club's signature summer drink. This special will run
from Monday through Saturday.
To keep the spirits high all week, we will run the fun and popular "Lucky Dog Races"
four times, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons! Just show up at
the docks for the Skipper's Meeting at 2 p.m. and if there are enough boats, an
informal race will be run.
Our Silver Jubilee Week will also start a new tradition. Wednesday is July 4th
so we will see if there is enough interest for a new concept - the "Fire Cracker"
Race. This will start off North Cove at 9:30 a.m. The Skipper's Meeting will be
at 9 a.m. The course will be out and around the Statue of Liberty in either direction
and then back to North Cove. The winning team of finishing and the winning team
of patriotic display will be recognized at the Annual Dinner.
Tuesday & Wednesday evenings will be reserved for cruising because this is the off
week between the spring and summer series. This will be the first Tuesday & Wednesday
evening for cruising in a long time and we encourage everyone to take advantage
of the celebration. Come down and do a sunset sail. On Wednesday, try to get back
to North Cove early because boat traffic will increase before sunset as powerboats
head up the Hudson River to be in position for the Macy's Fireworks display.
Our Clubhouse in the Harbor will be closed from July 3-7 because it will be be used
as the VIP platform for the KRYS Ocean Race. The clubhouse will reopen to members
on Tuesday, July 10. in the meantime, we will be celebrating with two-for-one Mt
Gay Rum & tonics at the Mermaid!
Our Silver Jubilee Week will come to a dramatic crescendo on Saturday with an incredible
event - the start of the KRYS Ocean Race. Details are below. Mark your calendars
and be sure to attend!
Witness the Start of the KRYS Ocean Race - Sat July 7
If you want excitement, here it is! Manhattan Sailing Club has been selected as
the official club to start the KRYS Ocean Race. What an incredible honor for our
club. The start will be Saturday at 11 a.m. This will be the culminating event
of our week-long Silver Jubilee Celebration.
The KRYS Ocean Race will feature five 70-foot extreme ocean racing trimarans. Your
can see full details about the race at http://www.krys-oceanrace.com/en/ [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001VHEN88RIEnFxK6WbwVC5QpmaarbzZs1AsS3GZuomXL0v-l8gmPJggLHdUFPJA1RKU5jZsJvRWTbwxEy1pEU3IeyumLS7xNwtfte3Xa_MTWS_QQ9L5YYVD4pMwvcGr7c1].
The boats will arrive at North Cove on Tuesday, July 3 and visible to the public
until the race starts on Saturday, July 7.
To see what these boats look like in action, check out http://www.youtube.com/user/multionedesign
The race will be from New York City to Brest, France. This race is historic for
many reasons and will be the first competition linking the Statue of Liberty back
to France. Hopefully the race will generate lots of media attention here in NYC
and become a bi-annual event. The race may also influence other great events to
stop here in the future. This is all excellent economic development and public
relations for Battery Park City and Lower Manhattan.
For the start on Saturday, our club will organize a special viewing area for members
and VIP guests on the south breakwall of North Cove. The viewing area will open
at 10 a.m. The race will start at 11 a.m. The actual start will be from our clubhouse
in the harbor. From there, the extreme trimarans will race down to a buoy off the
Statue of Liberty. Then they will race up to a buoy off North Cove, directly in
front of our viewing area! After rounding this mark, the boats will sail off across
the Atlantic Ocean! What excitement. The race is expected to take 6 to 7 days
and the finish will coincide with the Brest Maritime Festival which is attended
by more than 800,000 people.
If you would like to witness the start of the KRYS Ocean Race from our VIP viewing
area, please RSVP to emily@sailmanhattan.com [mailto:emily@sailmanhattan.com] by
July 4.
18 Teams Now Confirmed for Dennis Conner International Yacht Club Challenge
Eighteen teams have now entered the 5th Dennis Conner International Yacht Club Challenge
will take place August 17, 18 & 19. Italy, Japan, Australia, Scotland, Germany,
Canada, Bermuda & Denmark are fielding teams. No yacht club has ever won the Challenge
twice. More details are at http://www.myc.org/iycc/default.htm
Be sure to keep your schedule clear and be in NYC during this event. There will
be lots of opportunities to meet the foreign sailors and celebrate the sport of
sailing.
Spotlight Member #7 - Jay Wisnicki
To continue our celebration of long-term members during our Silver Jubilee Season,
Jay Wisnicki is interviewed by Emily Bomersback:
Do you remember your first sail in the harbor and what was it like?
I first heard about the club in September via word of mouth and I decided to check
it out. I went out with somebody I had just met at the docks, and they ended up
becoming a friend of mine; I believe his name was Matt. The club immediately impressed
me and proved as a way to get out of the New York craziness: sitting out on the
water, quiet, almost empty- not nearly as much traffic on the harbor as there is
now. To go from the dense, crazy population of New York and taking a crowded subway
train to go sailing and heading out into seemingly the middle of nowhere: what an
experience!
What was it like sailing out of the South Street Seaport?
The seaport was a little bit less developed then and was pretty nice, as it really
distanced you from the bustle of New York City...although; you always had to make
sure to avoid the Staten Island ferries! I remember an elderly gentleman who was
the first dockmaster there. He was incredibly ornery and we all knew not to mess
with him: those docks were his kingdom. He would tell you your boat assignments
and you had to check in with him after each sail. Coming back to the docks was always
a treat, as there were lots of nice restaurants and places to eat right there at
the seaport. It was also quite the sight to see all the boats lined up there- a
small sailboat docked between two huge boats from the 1800's. We felt pretty special.
How has the club changed over the years?
There are more people and much more organized than it was before. There also weren't
a lot of rules back then, kind of like the Wild West, with all the members figuring
out how everything goes and enjoying the camaraderie that comes with that process.
What is your favorite memory of the club?
The club used to have its own 45 foot boat and we would go sailing on it down in
the Caribbean. We also sailed that boat in Martha's Vineyard and in Newport which
was great. All of the activities of the club really set it apart from other organizations.
What is the funniest thing which has happened to you as a member?
Once I wanted to bring a bunch of friends sailing, but since you could only have
six people on a boat, I got one of my friends in the club to take out a boat as
well so everyone could go. I remember thinking that he was single and I had a friend
who was also single who was coming down to sail, so I put them on the same boat
together to see if something might happen there...they ended up getting married!
Welcome Aboard to These New Members!
Seen at the Club
Here are some of your fellow members "Seen at the Club." Do you have pictures we
could consider for this column? Please submit them to bomer@myc.org [mailto:bomer@myc.org].
Many club boats went out sailing to welcome Space Shuttle Enterprise to the harbor
as she moved up to the Intrepid Museum.
North Cove from above when the Clipper Round the World Fleet was in the harbor.
What a busy season it has been and it's not even July yet!
Matt Miller of Bloomberg TV was down at the club to go sailing with the Commodore.

John Duber is seen here teaching sailing to Lenay Dunn of MTV. Now that was super
exciting!
Members exchanging laughs and handshakes as they get ready to ride the Admiral's
Launch out to our floating clubhouse in the harbor. If you have not been to the
clubhouse yet this year, go out tonight. Be sure to make a launch reservation at
www.myc.org
because the evenings are beginning to sell out now that the beautiful summer weather
has arrived.
A great new tradition has begun on the clubhouse known as the "Induction Ceremony"
for new members. New Members are invited out to the clubhouse and presented with
Commemorative Medals which designate the year they joined the club. These medals
should be worn at the Annual Dinner and over the years, will become a great tradition.
If you are a new member but have not yet attended your Induction Ceremony, send
an email to bomer@myc.org [mailto:bomer@myc.org] and ask for another invite.
Just another great day down at Manhattan Sailing Club as one of our race teams heads
out into the harbor. Hope to see you soon.
