Movistar makes move
Overnight, movistar (Bouwe Bekking) took the lead on leg five of the Volvo Ocean Race and in the last six hours, Bekking has consolidated his lead to 13 miles ahead of ABN AMRO TWO and Sebastien Josse. Currently the Spanish team has more wind than the bulk of the fleet as they push hard to avoid the windless zones found under the large black clouds which are plaguing the fleet as they race north.
Positions are changing all the time as the teams sail into holes with no wind and are becalmed. Pirates of the Caribbean (Paul Cayard) has moved up from sixth position over night to third place this morning while ABN AMRO ONE (Mike Sanderson) has dropped from third to fourth and Brasil 1 (Torben Grael) has gone from second place to sixth. Only Ericsson, with new skipper John Kostecki in charge, has maintained her fifth position for the last 12 hours.
Movistar is 82 nautical miles off the Brazilian coast. ABN AMRO TWO is to the east of her, with Pirates of the Caribbean sandwiched between the two. Brasil 1 and Ericsson are following almost the same tracks with ABN AMRO ONE a mile and a half to the east of ABN AMRO TWO’s track. With 46 miles separating first to last and boat speeds ranging from 10.4 for movistar to 3.8 for Brasil 1, the racing is as intense as ever.

ALL CHANGE AT THE TOP
The past 6 hours have seen quite dramatic changes on the leaderboard and the Spanish boat, movistar (Bouwe Bekking) now hold the lead. Their westerly track paid dividends, propelling them to the head of the fleet at the latest poll. They have a lead of 5 miles over second placed boat, Brasil1 (Torben Grael), who also made gains since the last report, climbing from fourth to second position.
Shortly after 0100GMT both ABN AMRO TWO (Sebastien Josse) and Pirates of the Caribbean (Paul Cayard) gybed to the west, obviously hoping to pick up the better breeze, but less than an hour later gybed back onto starboard having not reaped a reward for their efforts. Ericsson (John Kostecki) and ABN AMRO ONE (Mike Sanderson) have been making similar tactical decisions in an effort to find the stronger wind.
The fleet are less than 100miles from the Brazilian coastline as they make their way to the scoring gate at Fernando de Noronha. The forecast is for light winds and tricky weather conditions ahead though which will slow their progress.
