Bekking increases the pace
Tonight there is a mere 335 nautical miles separating Bouwe Bekking’s boys on movistar from the long awaited Island, Fernando de Noronha and potentially first place at the scoring gate. They have managed to pull out a further four miles in the past six hours, now 29 nautical miles in front of second place.
Throughout the day the lost souls onboard The Black Pearl (Paul Cayard) have been looking over their shoulder at the Dutch black boat ABN AMRO ONE (Mike Sanderson) thundering up from behind. And finally Paul’s worst nightmare has manifested itself as they lose second to Black Betty.
Paul Cayard only today has been talking about how mentally hard it is knowing that even if Mike Sanderson and his men on ABN AMRO ONE make a mistake it seems to him that their speed advantage let’s them get away with it. After this afternoon’s performance and the extra three miles Mike has pulled out in front of them, Paul must be having a hard night out there.
Yet Mike has admitted one mistake today and it was a big one in the eyes of his crew. Mike’s best friend and fellow crewmate for many years Brad Jackson had his birthday onboard ABN AMRO ONE today. Brad’s wife kindly gave Mike a present for Brad and the rest for crew in Rio and when asked by the whole crew where the present of chocolate bars were, silence fell as Mike admitted leaving them behind. But at least the disappointed crew can console themselves with second place tonight.
The positions further back in the fleet have not changed in the past six hours with Ericsson Racing Team (John Kostecki) in fourth, Brasil 1 (Torben Grael) in fifth and 21 nautical miles behind them, ABN AMRO TWO (Sebastien Josse) lie in last place.
