Hand brake in the Chesapeake
Ten miles from the finish line of leg five of the Volvo Ocean Race and race leader ABN AMRO ONE (Mike Sanderson) has fallen into light airs and has slowed down to a nerve wracking one knot. Movistar (Bouwe Bekking) in second still has 12 knots of breeze and is sailing at 13 knots, 23 nautical miles behind the leader. With the tide turning against them, will the Spanish team be able to catch Sanderson and his men on ABN AMRO ONE? Or will the breeze fill in and allow them to keep their poll position?
Pirates of the Caribbean (Paul Cayard) has 181 nautical miles to the finish and is 54 nautical miles from the Chesapeake Bay entrance. Ericsson Racing Team (John Kosteki) is only 23 nautical miles in front of Brasil 1 (Torben Grael) with ABN AMRO TWO (Sebastien Josse) 17 miles behind them, bringing up the rear. The three yachts in fourth, fifth and sixth all have over 200 nautical miles to the finish in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
There will be an update as soon as the first yacht finishes.
