Volvo Ocean Race Village opens in Portsmouth
'Portsmouth Harbour with Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf' Portsmouth
The Volvo Ocean Race Village, situated at both Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, opened its doors to the public today and will remain open until 2 June with the seven Volvo Open 70 yachts set sail again on the penultimate leg of their epic 31,250 mile round the world yacht race.
Between now and the yachts’ departure a host of activities and events has been arranged at the Volvo Ocean Race Village to interest both young and old, sailor or non sailor.
In the Historic Dockyard is the Ericsson Pavilion where you can see and experience the very latest in mobile phone technology, whilst learning about the Ericsson Racing Team’s Volvo Open 70 and its crew taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-06. Also in the Historic Dockyard there is street entertainment, live music, comedy shows, as well as the Oculus Interactive Pod where you can learn all there is to know about this famous Ocean Race currently visiting Portsmouth.
At Gunwharf Quays is the Volvo Experience Exhibition, a fantastic display of Volvo cars, trucks and everything Volvo, including a fantastic winch grinding competition to test your strength and speed to try to emulate the professional crews taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-06.
There is also the RSPB Save the Albatross feature, the Volvo Merchandise shop another Oculus Interactive Pod, as well as different activities almost every day in Central Square.
At the waterfront stage a succession of bands, performers and acts will be entertaining the crowds during the Volvo Ocean Race’s fourteen day Portsmouth Stopover. With 140 different acts performing in the race village over the next 14 days, there is plenty to keep everyone more than entertained at both Gunwharf Quays and the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
