Catherine Chabaud, born in 1962 in Lyon, France, has spent
more than 15 years marrying together her two passions in life -
sailing and communications. With a Diploma from the French
Institute of Journalism gained in 1983, she embarked upon a
series of media and sailing collaborations, notably as the sailing
correspondent for the French National Radio station Europe 2 during three
editions of the Whitbread crewed around the world race.
In 1990 she had a Mini Transat boat built at the City of Science at La
Villette. This was the start of her career as a professional sailor. Following a
successful Mini Transat in 1991, she finished second in the
Vannes-Azores-Vannes race. Then she joined Christine Briand, Christine
Guillou, Anne Combier and other young women of the Océanes association
to participate in Match-racing, the AG2R transatlantic race, the Figaro, the
multihull Round Europe race, the Tour Voile, the Europe 1 Star, , and
Quebec-Saint Malo.
However, the turning point in her career was during the 1996/7 Vendée
Globe when she sailed "Cigare Rouge" ('Red Cigar'), VDH's former boat, to
finish sixth. More importantly, she became the first woman to finish a
non-stop around the world race.
She moved into the Open 60ft monohull class and right from her first solo
race, the Route du Rhum, she confirmed her place as a top-ranked sailor.
Unfortunately, she dismasted in this race but then won the Fastnet Race
overall. She was pipped at the post in the 1999 Jacques Vabre
Transatlantic race, leading the race right up to the last few miles to the
finish, but eventually crossing the line just a few hours behind the winning
duo of Coville-Jan.
Catherine Chabaud had a good, but unspectacular run in the 2000 Europe
1 New Man Star, finishing sixth. But her quiet commitment and
determination cannot be underestimated, and she must be considered
among the favourites with 'Whirlpool' in the Vendée Globe 2000.
