36 year old Roland Jourdain, or 'Bilou', born and living in Quimper, France with his wife and two children, seems to have sailing in his blood, and this, the fourth Vendée Globe, couldn't take place without him.

After the 1991 Mini Transat race, in which he finished prematurely back in the Gulf of Gascogne, he built a small racing-cruiser catamaran, and with the whole gang from La Forêt-Fouesnant (Jean Le Cam, Jean-Luc Nélias, Michel Desjoyeaux), he's been skimming alongside the modern generation of racing boats ever since. He completed the Round Europe race with Philippe Jeantot first, then with Laurent Bourgnon, raced in the Whitbread with Eric Tabarly on 'Côte d'Or' and then with the Russian crew on 'Fazisi'.
Roland has never ceased to race at top level, and has many victories to prove it. He is one of the new generation of sailors who combine good pure sailing skills with tactical judgment. He admits that it takes him a while though to get into his stride, thus preferring to race in nothing short of a transat.

Roland Jourdain finished second in the 2000 Europe 1 New Man Star. His Open 60, generally referred to as 'Sill', performed well in the race, and Jourdain is definitely a favourite for the Vendée Globe 2000.
