05.07.2001 - After 250 nautical miles raced since Saint Malo (France), none of the seven monohulls have managed to eke out a convincing lead! Between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the compact fleet of competitors sailed through the Straits of Dover, and the race is taking on the pace of a regatta on the high seas. At the halfway stage of this first leg, the boats are closely bunched and a tactical battle is raging to a background of sandbanks and the tides of the North Sea.

07.07.2001 - Bilou's SILL PLEIN FRUIT take leg one of the EDS Atlantic Challenge, with Ellen's KINGFISHER in second.
* ECOVER holds third after close fought battle with KINGFISHER for final 50 miles.
* These top three boats swapped the lead half a dozen times and finished in view of each other after 3 days of racing - amazing stuff!
* Fleet in Hamburg for weekend, before restart Monday 1400 GMT from Cuxhaven - bound for Portsmouth UK

Ellen was as usual sad to arrive back on land, but not unhappy with the result...
"Its always great to cross a finish line, and its been amazingly close racing for all 600 miles. Incredible that at the final turning point off of Holland, the top three boats were just a few miles apart and in view of each other. At that stage, any one of us could have taken it, but SILL sailed faster on the last 100 mile beat and snuck away, so we focused on covering Mike Golding on ECOVER, determined to hold our second place....well done to the guys on SILL, we're out to get them on the next leg to Portsmouth..."

Leg one results :
1. SILL (Roland Jourdain / Gael Le'Cleach) - 8 points
2. KINGFISHER (Ellen MacArthur / Nick Moloney) - 7 points
3. ECOVER (Mike Golding) - 6 points
4. GARTMORE (Josh Hall) - 5 points
5. FILA (Guido Broggi) - 4 points
6. LA RAGE DE VIVRE (Loic Pochet / Patrick Taberly) : 31 miles to go at 0740 Saturday
7. ALPHAGRAPHICS (Helena Darvelid) : 64 miles to go at 0740 Saturday
