FILA, headline News - Skipper Andrea Scarabelli:
A Big Bang Shook the Boat
Yes, yesterday afternoon at 1600 GMT we where sailing in 20 kt of breeze with the genoa and one reef at the indexsail. We where doing well and were quite happy that we were gaining again on Gartmore, when a big bang shook the boat and we saw the genoa and the forestay flying down along the boat....

Kingfisher has been the fastest boat over the last 24 hours with an average speed of 9.4 knots.

Ellen MacArthur and her crew have therefore been able to reduce the gap between Kingfisher and Sill Plein Fruit, although Sill reindexs in the lead. Only 35 miles now separate the two boats.

* "Very bad piece of news indeed" was the message which came through yesterday from Fila, reporting a broken forestay. Andrea Scarabelli's crew are never the less going to try and finish the leg with their Solent and three reefs in the index.
* Animal antics this time for Gartmore. As they are currently sailing in temperate waters they came across a turtle ... and after having carried out a comparative speed analysis, Josh Hall confirmed "We are faster than the turtle".
* 1503 miles to go to Baltimore (as at 4h54 GMT), Ellen tentatively suggests an ETA : "we're hoping to get before the end of July, either 30th or 31st, but the weather conditions are not very stable and we've still got to cross Chesapeake Bay yet".

EMAIL UPDATE FROM KINGFISHER THIS MORNING

Well things for the last 24 hours ahve been quite peacful and straightforward. The biggest event yesterday was tacking back to the Norht after the change in wind direvtion from the NW to the WSW. It was a difficult call as the wind was not so steady ind direction,,and frequesnt misty rain squalls were commonplace - altering the wind. SOon after our tack theweather cleared for the afternoon, bringing a cloudless clear blue sky and warm conditions. It was fantastic ,a and whena pod pf about 20 dolhins came to play diving inand out of the masive cean swell it was wonderful. They come from nowhere and play. I have only ever seen dolphins in these numbers in the north atlantic... Here so far North it is a haven for wildlife, and as ou sail firther towards the equator there is less. It may be colder and greyer here, but it is worth every moment spent with cold toes to see the wildlife here... We are out in the wilderness. Right now we make progress to the North with the SW wind. The breeze is building,a dn we have THe Gulf of St Lawrence 350 miles ahead of us. Newfoundland to the right,a and Nova Scotia to the left. wow. I have always wanted to see these places, known to be wild hostile in winter and little visited. We had our now usual evening snack of crumble and custard, and all are well aboard.
