“The index just exploded,” Stefano Pelizza said.
Despair was heavy in his voice. “Merde, merde, merde.”
With this morning’s run to St. Malo at 430 miles, they were on target for the 24-hour record, but now, with little chance of repairing the two-to-three metre tear about a metre below the headboard, their high hopes of beating the record and of winning the leg appear to be shattered. The location of the tear will prevent them from even sailing reefed.

If they had a significant lead over Kingfisher and ECOVER, FILA might have a chance to keep ahead, but the others are less than 30 miles behind her, and are going “full on.” The wind is expected to drop in the next 12 hours, but that is not going to give them the leeway they need to get repairs done and get back up to speed.
Just yesterday during the satellite radio call, Andrea Scarabelli said they were concerned about the sails, which are older. This index sail has seen many miles and was used on Legs 1 and 2, and is not the one that is optimum for these conditions. During Leg 3 they blew out their other index, and prior to the start of this leg, opted to use the older one.
We will keep you posted and check the Leaderboard for race positions.
