News update from Kingfisher Challenges to Dr Krumnacker Segel.de
TRANSAT JACQUES VABRE : what is it?
Apart from being one of the biggest gatherings of grand prix raceboats ever in Ocean racing, 'Jacques Vabre' the sponsor is a make of coffee...and as such they've been communicating some interesting stats this week as the fleet counts down before the start on November 3rd (for monos and 4th for the multis) - 90% of the French population drink coffee, 48% have a coffee after dinner, an average of 5.8kg of coffee powder per year and 3 cups a day!
However, advice from the Offshore Challenges sleep expert, Dr.Claudio Stampi, suggests the skippers themselves will have stayed off the caffeine for a while now - indextaining the maximum ability to cope with sleep deprivation during the coming weeks of hard core sailing.
The OC Sailing Team sponsored by Kingfisher plc are in good shape as the preparation phase is completed. First to get through the safety checks, 'Casto-Darty-BUT' (alias Kingfisher, the Open 60 Ellen raced in the Vendée) and her skippers are raring to get out there. But the other 16 monos all look in great shape as well - its going to be a tough race and no clear favourites to pick out of the top 7 or 8 sixty footers. Ellen and Alain onboard the trimaran Kingfisher-Foncia are also well prepared, albeit both hounded by the press as the interest in this race mounts, and journalists pour in to the docks in Le Havre where the fleet are amassed.
Long range forecast, and it is just that, suggests High Pressure dominating the Le Havre area for the start of the race... race map
