On Sunday 31 December 2000 at 13:00 (GMT) one of the greatest sailing adventures will depart from Barcelona, Spain as the giant catamarans in The Race set sail on their non-stop voyage around the world.
Virtual Spectator will be tracking the international fleet of six boats - Club Med (FR - skipper Grant Dalton), Innovation Explorer (FR - Loick Peyron), PlayStation (USA - Steve Fosset), Team Adventure (USA - Cam Lewis), Team Legato (UK - Tony Bullimore),and Warta Polpharma (POL - Roman Paske).
You'll be able to watch The Race on Virtual Spectator on a special version available for download from the official website courtesy of France Telecom - http://www.therace.org. This version is available free of charge and includes the leaderboard and 3D animation allowing you to zoom in and out on the fleet, change your camera angles and select the boats you want to watch. For the first time in an offshore race, the data will be updated every 4 hours - so you will be able to be right with the boats and watch their every move.
If you are already using Virtual Spectator to follow the Vendee Globe on the VS Sailing Channel, we will be joining the fleet as they head into the Southern Ocean a little later in January. The Sailing Channel will include for The Race, detailed weather and full commentary. We will advise you via email when we go live.
For webmasters interesting in receiving daily screenshots of the action in 3D from The Race, please contact us at info@ivmc.org. We will be able to provide a range of images - including the latest weather conditions the boats are experiencing, the leaders, or a particular boat. This information includes the leaderboard and the position data and boat speed of the leading boat. Images are available in two pixel sizes (600x445 and 100x72). All we would ask in return is for a link to the official The Race website and to Virtual Spectator.
