NEWS FROM ASSA ABLOY
The ASSA ABLOY Racing Team is continuing its sail-testing programme off
Gothenburg with the two new identical Farr designed Volvo Ocean 60's.
The team have been blessed with ideal wind and weather conditions with
the two boats reaching top speeds of over 30 knots during some intensive
sail testing during the last week.
Alongside the sail testing, crew testing has been an important issue
during the summer although the team have strengthened further this week
this the news that Neal McDonald, who competed in the last race on Silk
Cut and in The Race aboard Club Med will join the crew, starting with
the Rolex Fastnet Race. There are still two crewmembers to be decided
upon, who will be selected in the near future. In the coming week, the
ASSA ABLOY team will be sail testing both yachts over a longer passage,
sailing from Sweden to England, which will also serve as the 2000
nautical mile qualification sail for the Volvo Ocean Race. The team will
contest the Rolex Fastnet Race in mid August with only one of the boats
and then sail test back to Gothenburg with both boats.
The ASSA ABLOY Racing Team included a dummy run of the final leg of the
Volvo Ocean Race Gothenburg to Kiel in June to get familiar with the
conditions that can be expected for the race finale. The team sailed the
250 nautical miles in 31 hours. Skipper Roy Heiner reported from Kiel,
"This will be an interesting leg, we had a lot of wind changes and
unexpected conditions. It will be very challenging to race the other
boats here. The battle will be close to the finish line".
NEWS FROM djuice dragons
To ensure enough training and preparation time for the Volvo Ocean Race,
djuice dragons has decided not to participate in the Rolex Fastnet Race.
The team will stay in Norwegian waters until closer to the race start.
Over the last week, the race boat, djuice, has been on shore being
modified and fitted entirely into race mode. The team has been working
day and night to ensure the boat is truly "race ready" (right down to
the eating utensils) enabling them to concentrate solely on sailing for
the next month. The non-race boat has been sailing, mostly with sponsors
and press. The race boat will be re-launched this week, and the two-boat
racing will resume.
Tim Dean (UK) the team's rigger will be starting full time in the
beginning of August. Erle Williams (Team New Zealand) is assisting
djuice dragons as part of the afterguard, and will race some legs with them. The final race crew of 16 will be announced soon.
djuice's new official supplier, BonAqua, is on board, providing the team
with limitless sparkling mineral water while BonAqua, a Coca Cola
company, is currently filming three TV commercials starring skipper, Knut Frostad.
NEWS FROM Team SEB
The last couple of weeks have been very intense for Team SEB. Firstly,
the race against djuice from Göteborg to Stockholm was the syndicate's
first start with the new boat, SEB. While starting with confidence,
unfortunately the wind gradually died leaving the team to motor a
majority of the way to Stockholm. The next race start was the Gotland
Runt. Again, the team felt confident at the start and had a good race
against djuice the whole way round and were very happy to take first
place in the Volvo Ocean 60 class at the finish.
NEWS FROM Nautor Challenge
Following the christening of Nautor Challenge's two Volvo Ocean 60's,
Amer Sports One and Amer Sports Too, at the end of July in the
picturesque Porto Cervo yacht harbour, Sardinia, the syndicate
immediately relocated to North West Spain for their final work up period
before the race start. The trip through the Mediterranean and into the
Atlantic completes the 2000nm qualifying passage for both Grant Dalton
and Lisa McDonald. They have elected not to compete in the Fastnet Race
but will relocate to Portsmouth, England, in late August.
NEWS FROM Team Tyco
Team Tyco arrived in Hamble at August 3 following their Transatlantic
sail and have set up their base at Hamble Point Marina. The yacht is due
to measured in within the next few days but will compete in the Rolex
Fastnet Race. During the America's Cup Jubilee Regatta, the Tyco crew
will race the J-Class yacht, Endeavour.
NEWS FROM illbruck Challenge
Having just completed, and won, the informal transatlantic race last
week, most of the activity in the illbruck camp over the coming days
will be overhauling and preparing the boat and crew for the Rolex
Fastnet Race, when , uniquely, illbruck Syndicate Chairman Michael
Illbruck plans to join the crew. Following the Fastnet, the team will be
based from Hamble until the start of the Volvo Ocean Race.
NEWS FROM Team News Corporation
Team News Corp's Farr designed race yacht made her public debut in July,
as she was christened in New York prior to a transatlantic qualifying
passage that emulated leg eight of the Volvo Ocean Race. Fox News
anchorwoman Paula Zahn did the honours and cracked the traditional
bottle of champagne alongside News Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch,
watched by 500 company employees.
Her 13 crew, which include some of yachting most experienced players
plus a novice, were also unveiled to the world. Backing up British
skipper Jez Fanstone will be double race winner Ross Field (New
Zealand), America's Cup sailor Peter Isler (USA) plus 1993-1994 and
1997-1998 Whitbread sailors Nick White (NZL), Steve Cotton (AUS), Jeff
Scott (NZL) and Gordon Maguire (IRE).
Yet, the star member of the crew will be Bart Simpson, the misunderstood
under-achiever of television longest running sitcom, "The Simpsons".
Bart will represent Team News Corps sponsor in the Volvo Ocean Race,
News Corporation, whose affiliate, 20th Century Fox, holds "The
Simpsons" copyright. Bart's image features on both Team News Corp's hull
& spinnaker's.
In close consultation with "The Simpsons" creator and executive
consultant Matt Groening, Bart was brought to life. "This is the first
time I've let Bart venture this far from the Simpson's family," said
Groening. "But I love sailing and think Bart will do a good job,
encouraging people of all ages to get behind this great sport".
www.TeamNewsCorp.com, the official website, was also launched alongside
the yacht. The site, developed by leading New Zealand web development
company Terabyte, a key player in the development of Virtual Spectator,
has been designed to create a truly on board experience. Emails, video
footage and photos direct from the boat at sea will be uploaded
regularly and an interactive boat model strips a Volvo Ocean 60 layer by
layer, exposing information and photos about each aspect of the boat.
QUOTE (S) OF THE MONTH:
"The owners, designers and builders of these boats must be shaking their
collective heads wondering why they poured so much time, effort and of
course money into these projects only for the boats to be performing
closer than most one design fleets around the world".
Stu Bannatyne - illbruck Challenge
"The Farr boat's a stock Farr boat-fine in the front and big bumps at
the waterline tanks. It's a skinny-waterline, lots-of-rocker boat. The
Frers boat is a boat designed around the beams of the tank so it's
fatter on the waterline and shallower on the rocker. There's definitely
a lot more power in the hull itself. A lot more. When they're sitting
next to each other, the Frers boat is stable in the water and the Farr
boat's jumping all around. So, in any type of power sailing I would
guess that the Frers boat will kick the Farr boats around. It's going to
be a lot easier to sail in a big breeze on any point of sail-especially
in breeze downwind. I like the bulb design a lot better, too. It's
longer, more like an America's Cup bulb."
Dee Smith - Nautor Challenge
QUALIFYING SAIL
"A light south westerly guided the electric lime green illbruck
Challenge across the line off the Royal Yacht Squadron in the early
hours on last Friday morning. As an indication of what we may come to
expect in the Volvo Ocean Race, illbruck Challenge was first home in an
informal race across the Atlantic with Team Tyco and Team News Corp.
Team Tyco finished just 11 minutes behind the German boat after 12 days
and 3,500 miles of racing with Team News Corp a few more minutes
behind". For the complete story please go to www.VolvoOceanRace.org
VOLVO OCEAN RACE OFFICIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME
This 128-page colour magazine is nearing completion and will be
published on September 1st with a cover price in the UK of GBP7.50. It
contains in-depth details on all the syndicates, profiles of the
skippers, and a preview of each leg, together with features on each of
the ports of call. Advanced orders are being taken now by Graeme Beeson
at graemeb@zoom.co.uk .
WHO WILL BE THE FASTEST BY FARR IN THE FASTNET?
The Rolex Fastnet Race, one of the three classic offshore sailing events
in the world, will start at 16.00hrs on Sunday 12 August off Cowes, Isle
of Wight. England. With six weeks to the start of the Volvo Ocean Race,
the lions share of attention will go to the four Farr designed and race
ready Volvo Ocean 60's, representing Team SEB, News Corporation,
illbruck Challenge and ASSA ABLOY, who will join the 240 boat fleet that
will contest the 610 nm race. The course takes the fleet out of the
Western Solent towards Lands End, into the Irish Sea and around the
famous Fastnet Rock off Southern Ireland before racing back to Plymouth
in Devon.
Should the Fastnet fleet encounter the kind of strong idealic downwind
conditions that propelled the Volvo Ocean 60 Nokia to a course record in
the 2000 Sydney to Hobart race, the race record for the Volvo 60 fleet
set by illbruck 2 in 1999 with an average speed of 11.36 knots may
tumble. The index overall competition for line and record honours will
come from the 90 footers, Mike Slade's Skandia Leopard and Giovanni
Ignelli's Stealth. With no substitute for waterline length amongst
monohulls in light conditions, should it be a light wind race the
interest will purely centre on the private battle between the four Volvo
Ocean Race syndicates.
While the class winner of the last two races has not gone on to win the
round the world race, the performance divide between the latest
generation of Volvo Ocean 60's is smaller than ever with advantages
measured by inches and seconds, and not by the calendar. The winning
crew of the Rolex Fastnet race will carry an important psychological
advantage the next time the Volvo Ocean 60 fleet lines up proper, on the
afternoon of September 23rd.
Follow the Fastnet progress on www.VolvoOceanRace.org
THE START OF THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE
The Volvo Ocean Race will start at 15.00hrs (local time) on 23rd
September 2001, off Cowes, Isle of Wight. The start will be from the
Royal Yacht Squadron line and the fleet will leave the Solent to the
west, via Hurst Castle and the Needles Channel. The index shipping
channel will be closed for the period of the start (14.00hrs-15.15hrs)
by kind permission of Associated British Ports.
Spectator vessels must reindex outside the corridor until the competing
yachts have passed and under no circumstances travel in front. The
competing yachts can travel at 9.5 knots to windward, 15 knots on a
reach and at over 20 knots downwind and should be given plenty of room
to manoeuvre.
A complete Mariners Guide to the start of the Volvo Ocean Race will be
available on www.VolvoOceanRace.org from September 1st.
