A Fight to the last – for most of the fleet!
Although it may appear that illbruck is home and dry having a comfortable
lead (in excess of 30 miles) over her nearest rival, though we shouldn’t
speak too soon, the same story cannot be said for the rest of the fleet on
Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race.
It looks as though it is going to be a real fight for every other place on
this 4,500mile leg. Only three mile separates Tyco and ASSA ABLOY who are
fighting for second place, whilst a little further back five miles is
separating Amer Sports One and News Corp, and last, but, by no means
least, only three miles now separates the girls on Amer Sports Too, and
djuice. The girls have successfully held onto seventh position for most
of this leg, but djuice are pulling out all the stops to rectify this over
the last 950 nautical miles to the Miami finish. Determind to give 110%,
Emma Westmacott on Amer Sports Too commented earlier today that there is
“no slacking, dosing, or lack of concentrating, we have got this far, it
would be gutting to lose it now; so, drag out the extra coffee and just
keep going…!” It certainly looks as though there will be some
interesting sailing and jostling for positions during the final few days
of this leg.

Margin Narrows For Amer Sports Too
For the leading yacht illbruck the wind has continued to oscillate. They
continue to gybe downwind with every shift - approximately every 1.5 hours
- and have gained another 10 miles on their competitors, stretching their
lead to almost 40 miles. ASSA ABLOY and Tyco are within three miles of
each other, watching every move the opposition is making.
Amer Sports Too has gybed back onto starboard and is converging with
djuice, the yacht they want to cover on the way to Miami. They are
determined to keep up the pace as Emma Westmacott wrote: “…so there is to
be no slacking, dosing, lack of concentrating, we have got this far, it
would be gutting to lose it now. So drag out the extra coffee and keep
going...”
Another tight tactical battle is going on between Amer Sports One and News
Corp. Shortly after Amer Sports One gybed, News Corp followed suit to keep
the leverage they need if they want to pass over the next days.

Home Run For illbruck
Illbruck extended the lead by another five miles to almost 30 miles over
Tyco and ASSA ABLOY. As the wind oscillated in regular patterns, from 120
degrees with 15 knots to 140 with up to 24 knots, illbruck gybed several
times and took advantage of the straighter course to the finish. Tyco and
ASSA ABLOY are in close encounter again since Tyco caught up after passing
Barbuda yesterday morning. But with more then 900 miles to go, the battle
for second place is still very open.
Amer Sports One is defending fifth place to News Corp through covering
every move the competitor does. SEB sails 50 miles almost due north of the
pair. Amer Sports Too has regained two miles on djuice who are only five
miles from snatching seventh place away from Lisa McDonald and her crew.

Gone Fishing – No Bait Required
Once again there has been no change in the running order in the Volvo
Ocean Race. The front half of the fleet has slipped back slightly against
the leader Illbruck, and only the last two boats, Amer Sports Too and
Djuice have made any gains, 4 miles and 19 miles respectively. Djuice is
now only 7 miles astern of the girls’ boat.
There are literally millions of anglers around the world who spend endless
hours and countless pennies trying to lure elusive fish onto the ends of
their lines. Conversely, the flying fish in the Caribbean can’t wait to
fling themselves on board the Volvo yachts. The girls on Amer Sports Too
tell of the amazing places they can be found, “In sail bags, in rope bags,
under blocks and halyards, in the cockpit, on the foredeck, in the foot of
the indexsail, and some even full in the face of anyone who gets in the
way!”
