Raymarine support Derek Hatfield on Spirit of Canada
The skippers have covered thousands of nautical miles on board their boats, some have changed equipment, while others have electronics that have withstood the most gruelling of tests. A new Raymarine product that has been put through the toughest of tests is the new 400G autopilot with the 6001 auto pilot control head. It uses Raymarine's highly intuitive software known as Advanced Steering Technology (AST). Here are some of the skipper's comments:
"Since I left New Zealand, during all the navigation in the South Pacific, in the Atlantic and up to now, I relied completely on the Raymarine autopilot and it never let me down. It is an excellent product and the new version of the computer control is really amazing. The progress made on the Raymarine systems lately has been great and I plan to use them more and more in the future".
Simone Bianchetti - Tiscali
"When racing solo in heavy winds and seas from behind much of my off the breeze performance is reliant on autopilot technology. When I am down in the freezing and following conditions of the Southern Ocean I can't drive for large periods of time. The key to this off the wind performance relies on two features that the pilot must be capable of. Firstly the pilot needs a gyro stabilized ability to steer course relative to the true wind. This is a very difficult feature to perfect because of the vast amount of processing of data to calculate true wind from apparent wind relative to boat speed and heading. The second feature that allows me to have the confidence to push the envelope when running deep is the "stop gybe" feature in my Raymarine pilots. This feature does not allow the boat to sail through the dead downwind angle. This set of redundant features makes for the most advanced steering system ever configured on a single handed race boat and has made a huge difference in my downwind racing abilities".
Brad Van Liew - Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America
"My new Raymarine ST6001 Plus Autopilot has steered Spirit of Canada for over 16,000 miles now without even a hiccup. I can honestly say that the pilot seems to steer the boat better than I do. Top speed for Spirit of Canada is currently 25.1 knots; and this occurred on a fast surf, deep in the Southern Ocean, on the autopilot. The new internal gyro compass works the waves just like an experienced helmsman. I have complete confidence in the pilot to keep the boat on a fast and accurate course. It is the most important piece of electronics that I have on board."
Derek Hatfield - Spirit of Canada
Derek was dismasted close to Cape Horn during leg 4 and many of the skippers, friends and followers of the race have pulled together to help get Derek back on course and into the race, Raymarine are pleased to be supporting Derek and helping him to get to Brazil to complete leg 4 and ultimately the race.
Brad Van Liew has made it 4 consecutive wins so far in the Around Alone race, arriving into Salvador de Bahia in Brazil on Saturday at 15th at 12:16:56 local time (15:16:56 GMT. Class II overall leader Brad Van Liew arrived on his Open 50 Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America, completing the longest 7,880 mile leg with an 800 mile lead over his nearest rival Tim Kent on Everest Horizontal. Van Liew is now the only skipper in either class to have won every leg so far. In Van Liew's final log of Leg 4 he summed up the experience of racing Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America one third of the way around the world to another class win: "Merely surviving is an achievement, getting to the destination is rewarding and winning the leg is icing on the cake that has me buzzing internally."
