A VERY HAPPY CREW Saturday, 02 March 2002

After leaving Vannes yesterday at nightfall, Peyron and his men gently negotiated a tricky exit from the Gulf of Morbihan. It was a windy, rough night for the crew, busy with final adjustments to the mast. And at 0600 this morning the giant orange catamaran was closing in on the starting line off Ushant. The forecast wind was waiting for them: 25, even 30 knots from the NE whipping up a nasty chop in the Channel approaches. Without hanging around, but with precaution, "Orange", under triple reefed index and nothing on the forestay, crossed the line on starboard tack.

GERONIMO RETURNS TO BREST
Friday, 01 March 2002
While off the North coast of Brazil at 10° south, the trimaran Geronimo abandoned its attempt this morning to break the Jules Verne record because of mechanical problems. A steering problem rendered the boat un-manoeuvrable at high speed and under certain conditions, and the impossibility of making repairs at sea have forced the Jules Verne Trophy record-holder to turn back towards Brest.
