CLIPPER 2002 RACE START - PRESS CONFERENCE RESCHEDULED
** MERSEY RIVER WELCOMES ROUND THE WORLD RACERS **
The Clipper 2002 Race Start press conference will take place at 10:30 on
Monday, 21 October at the Pan American Club, Albert Dock, to mark the
ceremonial arrival of the Clipper Round the World Yachts in Liverpool.
The eight-strong fleet will sail into the Mersey River on Saturday, 19
October, after storms in the SW Approaches forced the yachts to seek safe
harbour in Falmouth earlier this week.
The conference, fronted by the Race Director, Colin de Mowbray and
Councillor Warren Bradley, Liverpool's Executive Member for Leisure and
Culture, includes a question and answer session with the eight Clipper
skippers and will precede a tour of the dynamic 60-foot Clipper yachts.
The fleet, representing the cities of Liverpool, London, _blank York, Bristol,
Cape Town, Glasgow, Jersey and Hong Kong, will set sail on the world’s
longest circumnavigation at 14:00 on Sunday, 27 October from Liverpool’s
award-winning Albert Dock.
This marks the first time the prestigious, international event has started
away from the South Coast, carrying a potential £10m boost for the
Merseyside economy.
Clipper 2002 also boasts the first female Clipper skipper, at a time when
the likes of Ellen MacArthur and Emma Richards are leading the way in
British sailing, with Samantha Fuller (26) set to skipper _blank York’s racing
entry in the epic global contest.
Monday also sees the official opening of the Clipper 2002 Media Centre on
the 2nd floor of the Holiday Inn Express, located within Albert Dock’s
Britannia Pavillion. Access to media facilities will be available to
accredited journalists, broadcasters, photographers, film and television
camera crews and technicians.
