CLIPPER 2002 ROUND THE WORLD YACHT RACE
JERSEY CLIPPER SKIPPER ANNOUNCED IN CASCAIS
Ed Green (32), former Glasgow Clipper skipper in The Times Clipper 2000, has
been announced as the acting skipper of Jersey Clipper during the current
crew stopover in Cascais, Portugal, with the next stage of the Clipper 2002
Round the World Yacht Race due to start tomorrow, Sunday 10 November.
The previous Jersey Clipper skipper, Johnathan Brockhouse, has decided to
stand down following the first race from Liverpool, UK, for personal
reasons.
Simon Rowell (35) from Cowes, Isle of Wight, will take over as permanent
skipper of Jersey Clipper in Cuba, at the start of the second race leg. As
replacement skipper, Simon will soon feel at home aboard Jersey’s 60-foot
racing yacht, having skippered Leeds Clipper -now Hong Kong- in The Times
Clipper 2000 Race.
Simon is an engineer by trade, having worked for a number of years in the
North Sea, Oman and Pakistan in the oil and gas industry. He made his come
back to yachting in 1997, as skipper of the UKSA Albatross. His experience
of sailing in varied waters, from the Solent to the North Atlantic, puts him
in good stead to get a running start with his _blank crew on the Cuba to Hawaii
leg.
Originally from Nottingham, Simon grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, and now lives
in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Commenting on his forthcoming challenge, Simon
said, "Ocean racing with such a wonderfully diverse team of people, some of
whom had never sailed before, let alone raced, was the ultimate challenge in
The Times Clipper 2000 Race. Clipper 2002, the world's longest race,
presents a _blank set of challenges and I hope to rise to this fantastic
opportunity for the island of Jersey.
"The Jersey crew made a great start to the eleven month race, securing a
close second place into Cascais, and we will be looking to build upon this
success to provide our many supporters in the Channel Islands with good
cause to celebrate."
Commenting on the situation, Jersey Clipper Committee chairman Senator
Pierre Horsfall said, "We are naturally sorry to lose Johnathan who quickly
established Jersey Clipper as a very competitive boat in training, a
reputation firmly reinforced by the crew's excellent second place in the
first race. We wish him all the best for the future.
"We welcome both Ed and Simon to the Jersey boat and look forward to giving
them and their crew 100% support as they strive to keep Jersey Clipper on
the podium. Their previous experience as skippers in the 2000 race will
stand them in very good stead and we are lucky that they have been able to
come forward at such short notice to join the Jersey campaign. We wish them
good luck and great sailing."
