CLIPPER 2002 RACE REPORT - _blank York Slows Down
Richard Butler, skipper of Bristol Clipper, reports, "Having taken a break
from the IT industry to race around the world I hadn't realised I would be
getting exasperated by the same technology problems as at home. Aaaagh!" So
we know he is happy; now on to the others.
_blank York Clipper under Samantha Fuller's command is handing over the
ownership of the northern flank to Justin Taylor, skipper of Hong Kong
Clipper, as both she and Chris Hazeldene in London start to edge south to
look for better wind.
The wind has veered more to the east and so several boats have been gybing
to and fro to try and get a better wind angle and avoid running directly
down wind. The 16:00 GMT schedule yesterday showed that _blank York Clipper had
stemmed the charge from the boats astern, but this morning the others have
once again made huge gains - four of them over 50 miles. That's not a nice
feeling as you are doing 5 knots with the other blighters to the south
averaging over 8 knots.
It now looks certain that Adam Kyffin and Rupert Parkhouse, skippers of
Liverpool and Glasgow respectively, have either got a rope snagged between
them or have promised their respective mothers that they would not play
alone! They have mirrored each other's every move for the 14 days of the
race so far and have almost continuously been in sight of each other.
Liverpool's constant boasts about "finally saying farewell to Glasgow"
seemed to have been over optimistic. Now that Glasgow's sewing party has
finished the Herculean task of putting their mangled 1.5oz spinnaker back
together, Liverpool had better watch the Scots even more closely. Cape Town
Clipper is still very much in touch with this duo and matched the fleet's
top run of 226 miles over the last 24 hours.
London Clipper have made their move south before they hit the light patch
that has obviously caused _blank York problems. They continue to go well and
could slip in behind Richard Butler and his Bristol crew over the next 48
hours.
Hong Kong believes the quickest distance between two points is a straight
line and appears to be heading directly for the entrance to the Old Bahama
Channel, now only 1800 miles away and there is no reason why Justin Taylor
and his crew will not be proved to be right in this assumption.
