Dear Dr Irvin

CLIPPER 2002 RACE REPORT
13, December 2002

FAREWELL TO CUBA, PANAMA BECKONS CLIPPER FLEET

Over one hundred Clipper crews will set sail tomorrow, Saturday, 8 December,
at 17:00 GMT (12:00 noon local time) racing from the Cuban capital of Havana
to Hawaii, via Panama and the spectacular Galapagos Islands.

Covering a distance of 1,075 nautical miles, the third race in the Clipper
2002 series gets underway off the entrance to the internationally renowned
Marina Hemingway. 30 eager crew recruits joined the fleet during a superb
eight-day stopover in Cuba, the largest island in the warm Caribbean, in
place of those competitors just racing on leg one of the eleven-month
challenge.

_blank York Clipper, skippered by Samantha Fuller, leads the fleet on 13 points
after the first leg which comprised two hotly contested races, although she
has Jersey snapping at her heels, having chalked up 12 points, and Hong Kong
closely behind in third place with 11 points.

The next stage of the Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race, a challenging
dash from Cuba to the port of Colon (Panama), is expected to finish on 21,
December 2002 at the approaches to the Atlantic entrance of the Panama
Canal. The yachts will then traverse the canal, travelling alongside cruise
liners and bulk carriers, before heading to Panama City for the festive
break.

Bathed by two Oceans, Panama City offers unparalleled opportunities for
diving, fishing and surfing. Although for those crews yearning for dry land,
today's Panama City is a very cosmopolitan city with a beautiful skyline of
gleaming skyscrapers basking in tropical sunlight. This vibrant, energetic
city, promises an unforgettable experience for the Clipper crews, day and
night.

Then it's off to the Galapagos Islands and the South Pacific!

Race 4, an 855 nautical mile race from Panama City to Isla Santa Cruz
(Galapagos), starts on 28, December with crews celebrating the _blank Year
whilst at sea. After a further stopover here, the fleet will charge across
the eastern Pacific Ocean to Hawaii, on the longest single stretch of the
whole circumnavigation.

In all the second leg takes some seven weeks and over 6,000 miles.
