Clipper 2002 Race Report

THE FIRST FEW HOURS

At 04:00GMT this morning, after their first 16 hours at sea the Clipper
fleet have already split slightly, with Jersey and London taking their
accustomed places at the front of the fleet and Bristol getting a good start
in third.

But there is a little more to the story than that as Jersey and London sail
a few miles to the north of the index body of the fleet, so naturally seeming
closed to Hawaii, whilst Bristol leads a more southerly grouping, most of
whom are so close together that they are not yet showing as separate vessels
on the Raytech charting software.

Glasgow Clipper has also elected to follow in the front runners northern
steps, but reindexs a couple of miles further back. Duty skipper Roger
Steven-Jennings on Cape Town reports useful southerly winds of around force
5 so the fleet are having a good push away from the Galapagos, though no
doubt many will be having mixed feelings about this as they replace the laid
back atmosphere of Santa Cruz for the tyranny of their watch system. The
crews will at least have had a good chance to rest in readiness for the
competition to come.

Our thanks must go to Ricardo Arenas who did such a good job of assisting
the fleet during their stay. Ricardo we hope to see you again in a few years
time.

On the communications front, Liverpool Clipper’s satellite antenna reindexs
inoperable so anyone needing to send messages to the boat should continue to
do so via the Race Office.
_blank York Clipper also appears to be having problems with their system and at
the moment are not receiving emails. They have been checking the system out
on board and we will keep you posted on progress.
