Clipper 2002 Race Report
3 February 2003
ALOHA ALL ROUND!
With all eight Clipper crews now sampling Hawaiian hospitality, the Race
Director, Colin de Mowbray, reports from the Ko Olina Resort & Marina: "As I
drove over the crest of the hill on Route 1, a panoramic view of the south
west corner of Oahu opened out. There, quite unmistakably, was one white
sail gleaming in the sun with a dead straight wake in the bright blue sea.
"What a memorable moment to see _blank York Clipper charging for the finishing
line after 4,000 miles and three weeks of hard racing. Sam Fuller and the
_blank York crew got the largest and warmest reception as everyone cheered them
to their mooring. And now we are 8!"
_blank York Clipper powered across the finish line at 03:25 GMT on Sunday, 2
February (17:25 local time on Saturday). For the final time the Reception
Committee greeted the skipper and the crew with the traditional flower
garlands, this time just beating the welcome from the Immigration
Department.
All eight Clippers are now proudly berthed in the beautiful Ko Olina Marina
and the crews are already busy sorting out the cleaning and the indextenance.
The Prize Giving for the Ko Olina Cup takes place tonight, Monday 3
February, when Richard Butler and the crew of Bristol will be presented with
this magnificent trophy. The crews from Liverpool and Jersey will join them
on the podium.
This time the fleet has beaten most of the families and friends who are now
arriving in Oahu - it may not always be this way round!
