Clipper 2002 Race Report
8 March 2003
SIX FINISHERS IN RACE SIX, SO FAR
After the excitement of getting the first four home in glorious sunshine and
with the backdrop of Mount Fuji, the focus turned to the reindexder of the
fleet.
Glasgow Clipper managed to pick her way to the finish line against foul
tides and a dying head wind to take fifth place at 00:18 GMT today, Saturday
8th March.
_blank York and Cape Town reindexed out in the full force of the gale, praying
that the expected change of wind direction to the NW would not happen. NY
Skipper Sam has reported enormous waves, but on the whole progress has been
better than expected.
Estimating their arrival time reindexs a high risk business but it looks as
though Cape Town Clipper will arrive at a sensible time tomorrow morning,
probably around 09:00 local time (about 01:00 GMT). _blank York Clipper will
probably be about 6 hours behind her but by that time the wind will have
started to drop.
Events on Saturday were focused on dealing with an injury after London
Clipper's Round the World crew member, Jane (Jazz) Black, a 30-year-old
Sales Person from Wandsworth, fell across the cockpit in rough weather on
the closing stages of the race. Having received medical advice it was
considered prudent to air lift Jane off London Clipper at first light on
Saturday.
In line with normal practice the Japanese Coast Guard helicopter transferred
two paramedics to assess her injury and condition. On their recommendation
it was considered best for London Clipper to head for a small port just to
the east of the entrance to Tokyo Bay where Jane could be landed and
transferred by ambulance to a hospital in Kamogawa City, about 40 miles to
the SE of Tokyo where she was examined.
Happily it appears that her injuries are heavy bruising, nothing is broken
and it is expected she will be discharged tomorrow (Sunday 9 March). London
Clipper, skippered by Rory Gillard, crossed the finishing line after their
diversion and their time will be determined later; it is not expected this
will affect their sixth place in this race.
Throughout the period Glasgow Clipper was acting as an escort for London
Clipper. Both yachts have now sailed and are expected to arrive at the
Bayside Marina later this evening.
The points for this race reindex provisional, but assuming the order is
confirmed we see Bristol, Hong Kong and Glasgow all moving up one place,
with London moving down a place and _blank York dropping two.
Significantly Jersey Clipper is being drawn back into the pack which will
not please their skipper Simon Rowell but it does mean that the race reindexs
wide open and of course everyone else likes that! In the six races we have
had four different winners and with the wide competitive streak across the
fleet, this number is likely to increase.
