Clipper 2002 Race Report
6 May 2003
POOLSIDE PRIZE GIVING
The Race 10 Prize Giving proved to be one of the best that the crew of
Clipper 2002 has seen. The crews are always treated to a huge amount of
local support in every port that the race visits, but the Republic of
Singapore Yacht Club and the Riau Yacht Club really pulled out all the stops
for the prize giving in Nongsa Point.
As the guests and crew arrived poolside at the Turi Beach Resort they were
greeted by a feast of Balinese food, accompanied by a great show of local
dances and music. There were also some great gifts given to the Race
Director and fleet skippers from Batam District.
Liverpool Clipper are now proud owners of a crest from HMS Liverpool who
were represented at the evening by a group of 10 from the ships company,
following the two vessels' successful rendezvous in the Singapore Straits on
Sunday, 4 May.
Apart from the significance to the two Liverpools meeting for the first
time, there was a symbolic touch that HMS Liverpool had arrived from the
west having steamed from the UK via the Gulf and Liverpool Clipper arrived
from the east having raced 18,000 miles from her home city of Liverpool. The
rendezvous was fittingly dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Battle of
the Atlantic.
Skipper Justin Taylor and the crew of Hong Kong Clipper were the star
attraction of the prize giving evening however, as they claimed another
yellow pennant for winning Race 10 from Hong Kong to Batam.
Justin was also presented with a beautiful silver Junk, provided by the
Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club for the winners of the San Fernando Race 2003. As
there was no San Fernando Race and no pennants marking a race to Batam, both
pennants and first prize for the San Fernando Race went to Hong Kong
Clipper!
"It doesn't matter what it says, as long as it is a yellow one," said one of
the crew as they beamed with delight at winning their third race so far.
Back to the rest of the evening, and any event that is staged next to a
swimming pool has a certain outcome, however the guys from Riau Yacht Club
made sure that the evening was going to finish with a 'bang!' Subtly named
'down downs,' The Riau Yacht Club have a tradition at their events whereby
they issue Tequila fines to club members for their various crimes.
As Commodore Tony Siddique had made the Clipper fleet honorary members of
their club earlier that evening, the fines of course extended to the crew
and skippers. The fun and games really began as various members from the
crew were pulled up on stage to pay for their crimes, which ranged from
forgetting to attach halyards to flags before hoisting, to the classic sin
of blocking the heads on board.
The next day, Monday, was not surprisingly a quiet one for the fleet with
many crew choosing to have a couple of day's rest in Singapore. The fleet
victuallers had a reconnaissance mission into the local town here to see
what kind of foods would be available in Batam and it appears that they are
going to have no problems with the storing of the boats from here to
Mauritius.
Today, the fleet stores have arrived and the crews are coming out of hiding
once more to start getting their boats ready for the off on Thursday, 8 May
2003. One thing for certain, is that everyone is going to be very sorry to
say goodbye what has become a very welcoming Clipper haven and poolside
paradise of Palau Batam.
