Clipper 2002 Race Report 4 June 2003
WHAT A KNOCK OUT!
Clipper crew of previous races have organised parties off their own backs very successfully. Never shall the crew of the 2000 race forget seeing race organiser Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in a pink Mohawk wig at out ‘Rock Legends’ bash in Hong Kong, for example. Yesterday however was the event of the year that the Clipper 2002 crew will laugh about for years.
The first ever Clipper ‘It’s a Knock Out,’ organised by Matt, Hanx, Ossie, Ricardo and Squirrel, proved to be quite a day!
The fleet met at the beautiful Melville Beach Resort, which allowed itself to break the silence of honeymooners' paradise to be taken over by a crowd of sailors and their families for the day; none of whom are sensible and all with no qualms about embarrassing themselves partaking in the fun and games.
Clothes swapping in Yankee 1 sail bags, obstacle races and adults tackling the line of ‘slippery fenders,’ were just a few of the day’s highlights. As expected, just because this race wasn’t out in the Ocean, each Clipper team was still as competitive as ever. This was best illustrated during the kids’ event - a simple sack race (in a storm sail bag) containing two children to an apple bobbing competition and a straight sprint to the finish line. Harmless fun you would think…
“Right William, this is what you have to do. Try your best it’s all just a bit of fun and those kids next door are racing for Bristol, so don’t worry if you accidentally trip them up!” True sportsmanship being educated to the future Clipper crews it seems!
The afternoon smoothly turned into evening, which saw an eventful Prize Giving reception, hosted by the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. As usual each of the crews who made it to the podium revelled in their moment of glory as the Minister of Tourism presented them with their pennants.
It was a great moment to see them finally get their rewards for such a close and exciting race - a point well made by Bristol Clipper Skipper, Richard Butler, during his winner's speech: “Who can name me any other Ocean Race that has had so many highs and lows, so many amazingly close finishes? We are all winners tonight, this was an amazing race!”
Hoping for another exhilarating race, are the _blank crews joining here in Mauritius to take part in Leg 5, from Mauritius via Cape Town to Salvador in Brazil. Today, nervous and slightly tired bodies congregate on the docks to set out on their first training sail before they set sail for South Africa. They have a beautiful sunny day and a fair wind blowing, so a good day should be had by all.
Tomorrow will see the victualling and stowing of the fleet, as well as the final fleet preparations before the eight yachts once again take to the high seas on Friday, 6 June 2003, setting sail for Cape Town.
