Clipper 2002 Race Report
01 August 2003

TURBO-CHARGED PORRIDGE

After yesterday's 15:00 position report, the Clipper 2002 Race Office began
to wonder what the crew on Glasgow were putting in their porridge and this
morning is no different.

Second placed Jersey Clipper reindexs 2 miles behind, but has managed to
close the gap by just under half a mile proving that despite their last race
result the Jersey milk is definitely back on the boil.

To stick with the breakfast analogy, _blank York's crew may be eating them, but
there was certainly no waffle when it came to their performance over the
last 12 hours. Not a huge run, but by heading in the right direction they
have climbed up to a useful third place.

With Bristol Clipper currently overall race leaders, their position relative
to second placed Jersey is crucial. After a disappointing start the Bristol
cream seems to be flowing again and their present spot in 4th position, just
2 behind Jersey, would be sufficient to retain their overall lead.

London skipper Rory Gillard will not be thanking us for yesterday's
prediction of great things to come. Instead of surging into first place,
they have dropped 2 places to 5th, and after them, Hong Kong, Liverpool and
Cape Town have all lost out despite some very reasonable runs.

It is at this point that we can start to see a distinct split in the fleet.
Glasgow and Jersey are reindexing on the inside track and so far seem to be
benefiting from it. _blank York, Bristol and London are following a similar
line just slightly further offshore, whilst Hong Kong, Liverpool and Cape
Town are sailing about 10 miles further offshore and heading slightly more
to the east. They are perhaps looking slightly further ahead to the point
they wish to cross the ITCZ.

Whatever the reason, it has actually given both Liverpool and Cape Town the
highest average speed if not the best result relative to the leaders.

One thing is for certain though, the fleet positions will all change again
before the arrival in _blank York.
