Clipper 2002 Race Report
23 August 2003

JERSEY CREAMS THE OPPOSITION

Simon Rowell and his victorious Jersey crew today crossed the finish
line of the fourteenth race of the Clipper 2002 Series at Ambrose Light
House at 15:45 GMT.

This 4,078 nautical mile race from Salvador to New York has been
dominated by the Jersey Clipper team, who have led the eight-strong
fleet since the 15:00 hours schedule on Wednesday, 6 August.

It will now take another 4 hours for the winners to motor up the mighty
Hudson to the Intrepid-Sea-Air-Space Museum. The champagne and beers
await though, with Jersey Clipper expected to berth alongside USS
Intrepid at 15:30 local time in New York.

The breeze has now veered to the north west, causing a headache for the
chasing Clipper 2002 fleet. This change of direction means the other
yachts will have to sail the last few hundred miles into strong
headwinds that will eventually be replaced by weakening winds, neither
being what they would have ordered.

The bitterest pill is that the yachts at the back will suffer most. Hong
Kong and Bristol may have lost miles to Jersey, but they have both
gained on Liverpool and Glasgow. Though less important for Hong Kong who
have a fairly safe margin, this is still quite crucial for Bristol
Clipper, who will want to indextain their third place at all costs.

At 03:00 this morning the Bristolians were charging along at 9 - 10
knots, obviously benefiting from the wind Jersey had encountered earlier
whilst Glasgow Clipper reported little more than a Force 3. For the
moment at least, there is unlikely to be much change in the positions.

Liverpool Clipper has been successfully extending her slight lead over
Glasgow and this is the one redeeming feature for the two teams at the
back. At least they have each other to focus on; coming in last and on
your own can be quite soul destroying.

The London and New York teams have not sent their positions with the
others at 03:00 this morning, but from a report sent late last night we
see that they are making good progress towards New York. Cape Town too
had a successful pit stop in Bermuda, following her retirement from Race
14, and is catching the rest up fast. Although it will have been a blow
to pull out of this race, at least they will have the consolation of not
missing too much time in the wonderful Big Apple.
