Clipper 2002 -- New York Stopover
HOME TO ROOST

New York City has welcomed all eight yachts competing on the Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race. The fleet is now berthed at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, alongside the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid - one of the most successful ships in U.S. history.
The Clipper 2002 fleet visit to the Big Apple is supported by the New York City Sports Commission, which ensures the continuation and growth of a healthy environment for professional, amateur and scholastic sports activities in New York City. In recent years, the Sports Commission has played a role in attracting or creating many new sporting events to New York, including the NFL Kickoff Live from Times Square, NYC Cycling Championships presented by BMC Software and the Senior Men's Tennis Championship.
"The City of New York is proud to welcome the Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race, as these teams prepare to complete the final leg of their amazing journey," said Commissioner Ken Podziba. "As this competition continues to unite countries through the sport of sailing, it is truly fitting that these ambassadors visit 'The World's Second Home.'"
Race Director, Colin de Mowbray MBE, commented: "Racing to New York will be a lifelong memory for all the crews. The excitement of their first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline will be with them always. Our sincere thanks are extended to Commissioner Podziba and the New York City Sports Commission for their support, and also to the Intrepid Museum as our hosts.

"I am certain that Clipper 2002 will stir New York's sporting passion during the U.S. stopover and will demonstrate why the city is such an exceptional home for great international competitions," he added.
A delegation from the city of Liverpool (UK) has joined the Clipper fleet in New York, including Liverpool's Lord Mayor Councillor Ron Gould and Lady Mayoress Councillor Tina Gould, Merseyside's Chief Fire Officer, Tony McGuirk, and representatives of Liverpool Football Club.

During their visit to Manhattan, the delegation is meeting with New York officials to promote the UK city to New York media and travel trade. At 11:00am on Thursday, 28 August, Liverpool's Lord Mayor will confer the Freedom of the City of Liverpool to New York City Fire Department & Emergency Medical Services, by presenting the City's Freedom Scrolls to Commissioner for the U.N., Marjorie B.Tiven, at a ceremony in Strawberry Fields, Central Park. They will also unveil a bench donated by the city of Liverpool in honour of the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11th.

Merseyside's Chief Fire Officer, Tony McGuirk, will present a Book of Condolence to the New York City Fire Department, and Liverpool FC will lead a coaching session in Central Park for New York City Fire Department's families. Ten Merseyside Fire Officers will also take part in the training session and football match.
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Ron Gould, said: "We are proud to welcome the heroic crew of the Liverpool Clipper to New York. They have battled fantastically throughout this, the world's longest race, and they are a real credit to our city.
"It will be a great privilege to bestow the Freedom of Liverpool on the people of New York. Our two cities share a great bond and I am proud to have the opportunity to present the Freedom scrolls to our great sister city, in honour of those who lost their lives on September 11th."

Tonight meanwhile sees the official prize giving reception for Race 14 of the Clipper 2002 Series and the eight teams will take to the high seas once again on Tuesday, 2 September setting sail for the penultimate stopover in the Channel Island of Jersey.
