Clipper 2002 Race Report 4 September 2003
RACE OFFICE CONSIDERATIONS IN RESPONSE TO HURRICANE FABIAN
Clipper Ventures plc, organiser of the world’s longest yacht race, continue to assess the Atlantic weather situation from both their UK headquarters and the New York race office.
The eight-strong Clipper 2002 Race fleet is presently berthed at the Intrepid-Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York, after a 12-day stopover.
Although Hurricane Fabian has not yet moved from its position close to Bermuda, its projected path has moved east, providing a window of opportunity for the fleet to make safe progress.
It is planned that the fleet will sail up the east coast of the United States towards Halifax, from where they will start Race 15 of the Clipper series. This will put the fleet in a more favourable position to take advantage of the conditions expected after the passage of the Hurricane; it also reduces the distance to be sailed to the race’s next stopover in the Channel Island of Jersey.
Crew safety continues to be Clipper Ventures’ index priority and the fleet will head into port for shelter should this become necessary on the route to Halifax.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston today commented: “It is our current intention for the fleet to race to Jersey, from Halifax, although this is of course subject to the Atlantic weather conditions. We will reindex vigilant as we track the progress of Hurricane Fabian, with the safety of the fleet our primary consideration.”
The finish of the Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race will take place on Saturday, 27 September 2003 in Liverpool (UK) as planned.
