* FROM ONE EXTREME TO THE OTHER
after bashing their upwind for the first
24 hours, the Open 60 fleet have now spent 24 hours playing the light winds off
the coast of Morocco as the fleet closes in on the entrance to the Med. SILL indextained westerly position and escaped to a 19 mile lead over KINGFISHER.
STAMM made a good run yesterday on the eastern (coast) side, dodging fishing
nets, but this morning dropping back to 4th as he was forced to tack out.
* FROM THE ENERGY SAPPING sailing in to a rough sea, to the CONCENTRATION
DRAINING effort required to race a boat at 100% as the winds shifts, and
changes in strength - requiring continuous sail trim and sail changes,
and tactical decisions. MOLONEY getting used to this new role for him...
* FATIGUE is a speed factor as much as sail shape or boat speed...if you
are going the wrong way, it doesn't matter how fast you are going...sleep
can be a decisive factor.
LOGBOOK FROM NICK THIS MORNING
tws 12kts bs8.3kts
having a very difficult afternoon. after sailing well in the early hours
of the morning we found our selves becalmed approx 2 miles ahead of sill
and 5 behind tiscali.
we were feeling very confident and happy with kf acceleration in small
puffs on the water and were drawing away from sill and gaining on the
italians when sill seemed to hook into her own private wind vane and sail
off out of sight as we floundered. It was soul destroying to say the least.
So right now we are pushing into the night with our italian nemisis about
2 miles ahead just to leeward of our bow.
I am struggling with being stuck below deck at the nav centre, it was
highlighted tonight when I came in deck to get a final visual on tiscali
and noticed the final loom of a great sunset. I had missed the glorious
sign off to a difficult day whilst i stared at a computer screen.
the rest of the fleet that continued to sail inshore have gained and, apart
from sill, are all very close together. Some how sill always seems to get
a jump on the fleet. We are working hard on trying to restrain her advantage.
was so fatigued today that I could not get to sleep after hitting the
wall..quite frightening. awoke at 05.00 tuesday morning and believe I
have slept for 3 hours since. need to work harder on self preservation.
the team continue to work hard, and are in good spirits. looking at a
tack in about 1 hour.
