Die Geschichte der Regata de Rubicon
To celebrate the 600th anniversary of the city of Rubicon and the first
bishopric of the Canaries (1402-1404), located on what is today the town
of Yaiza, a programme of commemorations has been put in place between 2002
and 2004, to remember a number of key moments in the history of the
archipelago, the island of Lanzarote and the town of Yaiza.
For the launch of these festivities, Pen Duick and the Executive
Committee of the VIth centenary of San Martial de Rubicon have created
the the Regata de Rubicon, a new fully-crewed oceanic race, reserved for
Open 60 and 50 monohulls. The very techical 3000 mile long route will
retrace the adventure of the first explorers of the archipelago.

Launched on the trail of De Béthencourt and Malocellus, the competitors
will set off from St Nazaire on 11 May 2002 for Lanzarote, the westernmost
island of the Canaries.
After a three day stopover, the monohulls will make a new start on
Wednesday 22 May, hading for Santa Margherita-Ligure in the Gulf of
Genoa in Italy. They will thus be making the opposite journey to Lancelotto Malocellus, who set off from Genoa in the XIVth century, becoming the
first person to conquer the unknown sea, passing the Columns of Hercules
to discover the islands. Thanks to his voyage, the first description of
Lanzarote in modern cartography saw the day.
Boats of several different nationalities are expected for this first
edition of the Regata de Rubicon. This new international-scale event is
enlisted in the 2002 IMOCA and FICO-LACOSTE calendars and confirms the
common European values of Pen Duick and the Canaries archipelago.
