Medallions for long-time competitors
Five sailors, two of them women, had their long-time personal achievements in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race recognised today at the prizegiving for the ocean classic.
Three of them, Michael Green, sailing master on Quest, Phil Eadie, navigator on Ragamuffin, and Kim Jaggar, watch captain on KAZ, all from Sydney, were presented with Tasmanian Government medallions to mark their having sailed in 25 Sydney Hobart Races.

Green’s father, the late Peter Green, sailed in 35 Hobart Races, this being the first time in the 59 year history of the race that a father and son have sailed in 25 or more races.
Two women, Felicity Nelson, who sailed on Impeccable, and Sally Gordon, who raced on Ichi Ban, received medallions for having each sailed in ten Sydney Hobarts.
In another notable achievement, Sydney yachtsman Tony Cable, sailed his 40th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race aboard Witchdoctor to join Victorian Lou Abrahams (41) and Tasmanian John Bennetto (43) as the first three yachtsmen to have sailed in 40 races.
Apart from receiving Tasmanian Government medallions, the names of these sailors will be engraved on the Huon pine honour roll boards at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney.
Once again, Hobart turned on a warm sunny morning for the riverside prizegiving at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania where the Governor of Tasmania, Mr Richard Butler, said the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race was indelibly linked with Australia’s maritime history.
It was an event that required “sheer determination and guts” to compete, “a fabulous signature event of racing on the ocean,” he said.
The Governor presented the Illingworth Trophy to Grant Wharington, owner/skipper of the Victorian super maxi, Skandia, while Mr Richard de Leyser, General Manager of Rolex Australia, presented a Rolex Yachtmaster watch to Wharington and the Tattersall’s Cup and a Rolex Yachtmaster watch to Michael Spies, skipper of the Overall Winner, First National Real Estate.
