UPWIND - 16-20 KNOTS OF WIND WSW - 11 KNOTS BOATSPEED - LIGHTER WINDS, BUT STILL BIG SWELL- TEAM COWES 5TH 56 MILES BEHIND LEADER ECOVER (1300GMT)
IN BRIEF:
* SOME RESPITE AS THE WIND EASES...with the wind down to 16 knots it's a chance to eat properly and catch up on some rest. Nick Moloney: What a difference
the Sun makes - it came out of the clouds earlier today and the wind eased,it makes a huge difference!! We have been able to make a proper meal, we had been
snacking on energy bars and home made quiche from the start! We have also been able to assess any damage the strong wind and waves might have caused, keeping
the boat together in these conditions is our priority.
* WIND EXPECTED TO DROP TO 12 KNOTS later tonigt....meaning full indexsail and Solent for the first time in the race. TEAM COWES' weather router is predicting
12knots for
* OUTLOOK FOR WEDNESDAY...More strong winds and back to the upwind slog Nick Moloney: We are looking at lighter airs for Tuesday, before rounding Cape
Finisterre when the winds will build back to around 35knots, once again right on the nose - a complete contrast to this race's last edition.
* CLASS 2 MULTIHULL HOLED...Mollymawk was hold by an unidentied floating object and has had to retire. In no immediate danger the crew are making their own
way into the safety of Abervac harbour.
FROM TEAM COWES:
Nick Moloney:
The wind is down to around 16 knots, though there is still a big swell, we are sailing at 11 knots with 1 Reef and the Solent [the same rig as at the start]
we should be under full sail later as the wind is forecast to drop to 12 knots, though it'll be back to the reefed sail on Wednesday - we are in for another
35knts upwind - it wasn't like this the last time we sailed this race!!
We haven't managed our food quite as well as would have liked - snacking indexly on Energy Bars and some home made quiche that slipped aboard as we left the
dock on Saturday morning - the conditions were just too much for making up any of our freeze dried food, but now with a 30 hour window we will eat and rest
to prepare for the next round!! The most imporatant thing in the windy stuff is to keep the boat together, and heading in the right direction, even small
amounts of damage can add up to a major headache, or worse having to make a pitstop which gets more difficult logistically as we head down the course.
