Rodney Bay Marina 12 Dec 2003 10:10 GMT
It’s 5am in Rodney Bay, and ‘Bosun’s’ Bar is still stomping! For all new arrivals during the night, ‘Bosun’s’ has become the first stop for a cold beer and a chance to catch up with boat crews who have also recently arrived. The hardest thing for the ARC team about being on watch at this time in the morning, is the incredible smells that waft across from the Bread Basket as the baker bakes bread, pastries and all the goodies that keep them sustained during the day. Unfortunately, begging at the door for him to open early doesn’t work (we’ve already tried it!), so 7.00am is always a good time when he flings open his doors for the early birds.

As we write, Tenacious, the Jubilee Sailing Trust barque is due to cross the finish line. With 49 crew members on board, the marina dinghy is loaded to the gunwalls with fruit baskets and rum punch, ready to take out to them once they have anchored. This year the passage for Tenacious has been relatively un-eventful, which means her and her crew can now enjoy a few days taking in the sights of St. Lucia and of course, the parties.
Last night’s ARC party was at the Royal St. Lucian Hotel on Reduit Beach. Set in spectacular surroundings the hotel provided nibbles and laid on a never-ending barbeque at a very reasonable price for any participants who wanted to stay and dine. With flame torches lighting up the beach this was quite a unique dining experience, and judging by the number of tables occupied it was a big hit.
A wonderful sight yesterday afternoon was the arrival of French yacht Glenan, with the family Delvigne aboard (mum, dad and 3 children). Eldest son Yann, aged 13, played the bagpipes from the aft deck of the yacht as she crossed the finish line - quite a sight for St. Lucia! Early evening, the yacht Inspiration arrived. A Bavaria ’49 from the UK, Inspiration’s crew had forgotten to fill up her water tanks prior to departure from Las Palmas, so had survived on bottled water for everything for the entire crossing. They were also desperately short on fuel and had just a trickle left to come alongside with – good planning guys!
St. Lucia was also delighted to welcome back local lad Eric Jean aboard the German boat Miciadeu close to 9.00pm last night. A more elaborate welcome will take place tomorrow for Eric and Vincent Clerice, skipper of Brigand, another St. Lucian who arrived the day before yesterday.
Tonight is ‘jump up’ night in Gros Islet and Fish Friday in Anse la Raye, on the windward side of the island – so participants need to get on those dancing shoes!
