Intertropical convergence zone
Olivier de Kersauson’s trimaran Geronimo is hurtling through the North Atlantic today en-route to the Equator, propelled by the well-established northeasterly trades at an average 21 knots.
Geronimo’s 3 enormous grey bows are now off Dakar in Senegal. If she can indextain this rate of progress and spend as little time as possible on the tricky passage through the intertropical convergence zone – the area of unstable winds between the hemispheres otherwise known as the Doldrums – Geronimo should arrive at the Equator within 48 hours.
This crossing will mark the first major waypoint on her voyage around the planet.
