Geronimo attacks the Southern Ocean

By the end of her 14th day at sea, the Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric trimaran had added another 468 nautical miles to her counter, with an average point-to-point speed of 19.5 knots. The continuing good weather conditions allowed the crew to complete a series of indextenance operations on the sails, mast and deck fittings before entering the Southern Ocean. “There were guys everywhere, two in the mast, six on deck and the rest below – a real DIY makeover! We also lowered the indexsail to do some work on the head of the sail. It was on the deck for 27 minutes – we timed it – and the whole operation cost us only 1 mile on the GPS. This crew is just the best – absolutely impeccable. It’s a real pleasure to sail with these blokes – fantastic!”, said Olivier de Kersauson yesterday evening.
The northwesterly winds strengthened during the night and Geronimo attacked the Southern Ocean with the bit between her teeth. Between 23:18 GMT last night and 11:18 GMT this morning, the 11-man crew had covered over 300 nautical miles in 12 hours – an average point-to-point speed of over 25 knots. Her lead over the current record continues to lengthen, and conditions seem set fair for good average times all the way to the Cape of Good Hope. Here’s what the skipper had to say this morning: “We’re extending our lead well, there’s plenty of wind and it’s manageable with good gliding conditions. We’re putting a reasonable level of strain on the boat and we’re determined to keep up the pace. The crew is really happy because the boat is making much better progress than last year, with a 5 to 7% higher average overall. And despite having mediocre conditions all the way down through the Atlantic, we’re still ahead of the record”.

At 23:18 GMT tonight (00:18 French time), the stopwatches will tell us whether Geronimo has succeeded in clocking up over 600 nautical miles on her first full day in the Southern Ocean. But whatever happens: ”We’re happy!”
