Jules Verne Trophy
Geronimo at Cape Leeuwin
The Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric trimaran crossed the longitude of Cape Leeuwin (the south-western tip of Australia) at 10:50 GMT today, 26 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes after crossing the start line off Ushant. At the end of her 26th day at sea (23:18 GMT last night), she had a comfortable lead of 1,245 nautical miles over the time set by the current record holder Orange. But this line was crossed under rather unusual conditions...

109.5 nautical miles: that was the distance covered in the first 12 hours of the day by Geronimo, and it's the slowest average speed recorded by the trimaran since the start, with just 9 knots of wind blowing between the Roaring Forties and the Howling Fifties. The sea is as smooth as Lake Geneva in a heatwave. A small tropical depression, which came between the two weather systems just ahead of the trimaran, broke the airflows that would have helped the 11-man French crew jump from one to the other. As they waited for this minor climatic anomaly to become absorbed by the gigantic depressions that play musical chairs around the Antarctic, the crewmembers had no choice but to exercise patience. A day of 350 nautical miles is more restful than one of 500, but that's a very small consolation…
Since midday, the winds generated by the huge depression to the west have strengthened considerably, as if trying to make up for lost time. In the space of an hour, Geronimo's anemometers recorded a doubling in wind speed as conditions returned once more to what is normal in this part of the world at this time of year. The trimaran can now resume her journey through the Pacific at over 20 knots.
