Jules Verne Trophy
Twice the distance, three times the trouble
Geronimo has been sailing close-hauled since the middle of the night, in about 30 knots of wind and a temperature of 4°C on deck. The trouble was caused by a small area of low pressure, which detached itself from the major depression on which Geronimo is relying and passed across the route of the trimaran. The sustained south-westerly wind was suddenly disrupted and proceeded to swing around every point of the compass. This small weather system is moving very quickly, but has seriously disrupted the progress of the 11-man crew. It seems increasingly clear that it will prove impossible to get below 50°S, as the southerly depressions move further and further North. All of which points to this being the end of the southern summer...

On her 29th day at sea, the Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric trimaran covered 480 nautical miles at an average speed of 20 knots, increasing her lead over the record to more than 1,400 nautical miles. It now looks as if conditions for crossing the Pacific may be less than perfect, so this lead is hardly a luxury.
