Everyone knows that in sailing the weather dictates all
The skippers in The Transat constantly monitor the weather seeking the optimum route to get to
Boston as fast as possible. Today the ORMA 60 multihulls are fast
approaching the eye of a big depression and are looking to exit the
depression on some fast reaching conditions. The rest of the fleet will have
to battle longer against some strong headwinds before clearing this system.
The Transat team are working exclusively with Theyr.Net to provide detailed
weather analysis for everyone following the race. Using products which are
all delivered via standard web technology, Theyr.Net makes it possible to
preview the development of major weather systems, as well as carry out
tactical planning at the most detailed level all without needing to have any
special skills in meteorology.

Today's digital communications technology makes it possible to deliver
detailed weather forecast data directly to yachts out on the ocean. The
standard digital forecasts available in the public doindex typically only
provide wind vectors at 60 mile intervals and for 6 hour time steps. Although
this level of data is usually sufficient for avoiding severe weather
conditions, it is only of limited use for tactical routing when sailing.
Theyr.Net has used advanced scientific computing techniques to develop a
comprehensive forecast system that delivers highly detailed forecasts which
typically contain 16 times as many data points as in a standard forecast. The
Theyr.Net forecasts are available in three formats: via a web interface
(http://www.theyr.net), as digital video (DVD) or as raw data files (GRIB).
The intuitive what, when and where web interface makes it possible for the
user to very quickly find out what weather to expect at a particular location
and time. Because the Theyr.Net data network is so dense, there will always
be a forecast value within 10 miles of any position, and 30 minutes of the
chosen time.
The digital video product visualises the development of cloud on a regional
basis and is complemented by precipitation and wind fields to provide a
unique overview of weather systems in action as they grow and decay.
By delivering high-resolution GRIB data to the offshore yachtsman, it is
possible to seamlessly combine the weather parameters required for tactical
decision making, with the modern advanced electronic chart systems used by
ocean-racing navigators.
The Theyr.Net weather products represent an innovative step for the yachtsman
to gain a much more detailed insight than previously possible into the
weather conditions likely to be encountered en route.
The TRANSAT is the first ocean race that has had a weather support service of
the calibre provided by Theyr.Net.
