05/06/2004 11:45:57: J-P DICK DESCRIBES VIRBAC'S 360
Jean-Pierre Dick describes dismasting over satellite 'phone; "An enormous wave arrived that I didn't see - I was inside the boat. She did a 180 first...then a 360, the roll took 5 seconds altogether. You can imagine the mess inside." The French skipper is concentrating on hand baling water from Virbac's interior and looking at his options for reaching land.

05/06/2004 10:12:40: DESJOYEAUX ON ICEBERG WAYPOINT
Michel Desjoyeaux on leading trimaran, Geant, is right on the waypoint placed to restrict yachts sailing into an area of icebergs. He reports headwinds and rough seas; "It's not very comfortable, but everything is OK."

05/06/2004 09:51:23: SANDERSON STEERS FOR 7HR STRETCH IN NIGHT...
Mike Sanderson forced to steer for up to 8 hours last night after damage to the wind instruments at the top of the mast, rendering his autopilot useless... With too much sail up but too risky to leave the helm to reef as Pindar AlphaGraphics launched herself off wave after wave... Sanderson is firmly in "the exhausted basket"...

05/06/2004 09:38:32: WE ARE TAKING A PUNISHING
Conrad Humphreys... "Boat is taking such a punishing - jumping off waves and the rig flies around - it's crazy, you just want to get out of here. It was very emotional to hear about Virbac - I wouldn't wish that on anybody but sure he is well-equipped to sort himself out..."

05/06/2004 09:25:43: GOLDING IN PROTECTION MODE
Talking on Transat Radio, Mike said: "Reality of these conditions is to stay in tact and safe...you go into protection mode. You stay below only go on deck when you have to. I was genuinely afraid to tack last night - I really had to get Ecover on her ear to get the keel over ..." (Golding has to move his keel manually since the hydraulic motor 'fried' on day one).
