Bernard Stamm contacted the Race Direction Team at 0525 GMT this morning to report that he had lost his keel and the boat had capsized but his mast was intact. At this stage the sails were keeping the boat on its side and it was temporarily stable. Bernard Stamm has suffered no physical injury and is safe inside the boat in his survival suit.

The Race Direction Team have requested skipper Sebastien Josse on board VMI to divert - VMI is 200 miles north-east of Stamm's position. Sebastien Josse has agreed and is approximately 15hrs from the position of Stamm - ETA at Stamm's position is approximately 2100GMT tonight (7.6.04).

MRCC Halifax are co-ordinating both airborne and seaborne assets of the rescue operation of Bernard Stamm and the Race Direction Team are in continuous contact with MRCC Halifax.

No further details are available at this time. Updates on this situation will be relayed to all concerned. Go to http://www.thetransat.com for latest information.

RACE DIRECTION TEAM CRISIS LOG:
0345 GMT approx. OCE press office call Bernard Stamm as leader of IMOCA fleet to record an interview. During course of interview BS reveals has issues with keel and has 45kts of wind. He is trying to slow the boat down as much as possible as keel is vibrating at high speed
0525 GMT approx. MT recieves a call from BS who was calm but explained that boat was on its side, with the mast still intact but he was very sure that the keel had broken. At this stage the sails were keeping the boat on its side and it was temporarily stable (much like a dinghy would be). BS was inside and after putting on survival suit was going to assess the situation. At this time he had not activated his distress beacon. He reported his position as 49deg50.5N 44deg08.2W.

No further verbal communication achieved with BS. MRCC Halifax (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre for this area) , BS shore team and family alerted of the situation.
0645 GMT Approx. MRCC Halifax call to relay that distress signal was picked up eminating from BS boat (a manually operated Kannad 406 beacon which was internally mounted). Search and rescue procedure initiated by MRCC Halifax
The closest yacht to BS is PRB which was dismasted earlier 60miles to SouthEast and downwindand of BS and therefore has limited ability to proceed upwind towards BS. Vincent Riou had earlier reported 25kt of wind and a moderate to rough sea from the NorthWest. Ecover and Pindar are approx. 100miles to the South - again directly downwind of BS. VMI 200 miles to North East but with a more favourable position in terms of wind angle. Sebastian Josse (VMI) has been requested to divert (and has agreed) by the Race Direction team and is approximately 15hrs from the position of BS - ETA at BS position 2100 GMT tonight.

0745 GMT MRCC Halifax coordinating both airborne and seaborne assets. No further details have been released at this time.
