PRESS RELEASE N°2
Transat Québec-Saint Malo : D – 3 days!
Sunday 11 July will see the start of the sixth edition of the one and only west to east transatlantic: the Québec-Saint Malo. Some weeks after the finish of The Transat, the 50 and 60 foot multihulls and the 50 foot monohulls return to their native Europe but this time in crew configuration. A hazardous course will lead them from the Saint-Laurent river to the North Atlantic before making the Corsaire town of Saint Malo 3 000 miles (5 556 km) away. 7 to 10 days of racing for this ocean sprint organised every four years and a record to beat that was established back in 1996 by Loïck Peyron aboard Fujicolor II in 7 days, 20 hours and 24 minutes.
Rapid, often severe, convivial but hotly disputed, the Québec-Saint Malo is far from being uncomplicated with three different stretches of water: the Saint-Laurent, the North Atlantic and the Channel. Gripping stuff!
In its 20 year history the Transat Québec-St Malo has always brought together the finest sailors of the time, whether they be in monohulls or multihulls.

The greatest ocean racers have had their names etched into the history of the race : Loïc Caradec and Philippe Facque, Hervé Perrin, Serge Madec, Titouan Lamazou, Laurent Bourgnon, Pierre Fehlmann, Loïck Peyron, Pierre Mas, Franck Cammas and Hervé Cléris, to name just the winners… Some of these skippers and their crews will be present in 2004, as is the case for the veteran of the event who hasn’t missed a single edition, Mike Birch who will be aboard his 50 foot multihull Nootka.
A history written by the best of them!
The best of their time…
Also, to celebrate this anniversary edition, there will be twenty one taking the start: twelve 60 foot multihulls (routing forbidden to this Orma class) with 5 to 6 crew aboard, six multihulls and three 50 foot monohulls (class 2) who will have 3 to 5 crew. If we take a closer look at the list of participants, we see the pride of the Orma multihull fleet. For starters there is the recent winner of The Transat and the last Route du Rhum, as well as leader of the Orma championship 2004, Michel Desjoyeaux (Géant) ; similarly there is the Orma triple champion Franck Cammas, not to mention the only female skipper in the class, Karine Fauconnier (Sergio Tacchini).
As for the 50 foot multihulls, Franck-Yves Escoffier (Crêpes Whaou !) and Anne Caseneuve (Atlantic Nature) figure amongst the favourites. But they will have to look out for the veteran and fanatic of the race Mike Birch (Nootka) who surely knows all the traps and secrets of the Saint Laurent.
Finally amongst the 50 foot monohulls, there will be just three at the start. Difficult to say whether Luc Coquelin (Marina Fort Louis Saint Martin), Roger Langevin (Branec III) or the local of the leg Georges Leblanc (Ciment St-Laurent) will come off best.
An action-packed event in terms of both weather and course!
The Transat Québec-St Malo provides some very varied sailing conditions, both technically and tactically, much to the delight of today’s ocean racers who have become real regatta sailors. Initially there is the descent of the 400-mile long Saint-Laurent river with its numerous passage marks and pitfalls. Inevitably they have to slalom between the islands and the rocks, thwarting the currents, picking a way through the mist, reindexing calm in the light conditions and serene in the storm.
Past the mouth of this river and the famous bay of the St Laurent, is the exit into the Atlantic ocean, the second large section of the course. It is not unheard of for the first to make it out of the St Laurent to be the first to arrive in Saint Malo. The game plan then consists of catching a depression and gliding with it as far as southern Ireland. Going in the direction of the depressions, the Atlantic is generally swallowed up within 3 to 4 days, downwind, surfing the isobars. This is where a number of 24 hour records have been beaten.
The last stretch of the course is raced through the Channel, between the Fastnet and Saint Malo, and can easily shape up to be a difficult passage. In 1984, on glassy seas, Royale was but a few boat lengths ahead of Charente Maritime at the finish. Sixteen years later, Biscuits la Trinitaine, saw its 300 mile lead melt away on the approach to the finish line. In the calm of the last night of racing, five multihulls were battling for victory. It was Groupama that won it ultimately...
Double take for the start!
Two starts will be given on Sunday 11 July. The first at 12h35 Canadian time - 16h35 GMT- for the Class 2 multihulls and monohulls. The second, for the Orma multihulls, at 12h50 Canadian time -16h50 GMT. What this means is that besides the difficulties of the descent of the Saint-Laurent, the fleet of Orma multihulls should pass the nine 50 footers before reaching the open sea.
