RACE REPORT - 2nd Night at sea
New York Clipper currently lying 3= After a hectic first night, conditions eased over the course of yesterday and although the boats are still beating into the wind they are making somewhat more comfortable progress than before. I am pleased to report that Jersey crewmember Peter Mourant arrived safely at hospital in Fisguard yesterday afternoon and aside from his ankle is otherwise well. The Jersey crew have asked me to pass on a big thank you to all those from the Coastguard, RNLI and Ambulance service who assisted with Peter’s transferal.
Positions continue to change, but the unknown quantity this morning is Glasgow who have gone into “stealth” mode. This can quite often happen and can be due to a number of things from interference on a radio transmission to simply being too busy to report at the appointed time. This will also be quite unnerving for the rest of the fleet. Information is key to deciding tactics and so the 12 hourly reports are eagerly awaited by skippers and crew. As soon as the boats are out of sight of each other the radio reports are the only way to ascertain what the competition is up to, and how well or otherwise they are doing. There is nothing worse than having what you think has been a really good day, only to find that everyone else has done better.

Each skipper will be sitting at the chart table, radio in hand, waiting to give their position and distance to go to the finish, and quickly noting down the information given by all the others. This will then circulate round the crew – hurray, we have gained two places, oh no, we have fallen to 5th and so on. The skippers will then plot the fleet positions on their UKHO ARCs charts, and decide their strategy from there.

As news from the boats slowly filters through, we get some idea of life on board since the start. Seasickness has been a problem throughout the fleet as the crews get used to the Irish Sea, Victoria Skipper Ewan Hind has lost his voice which he says makes coordinating foredeck work very interesting, and New York Skipper Jonathan Bailey reckons that he actually got airbourne as the boat flew over a wave. Trouble was, he was in his bunk at the time!
