2005-09-29 RACE REPORT - RACE 2 START
Crossing the start line
Settling in
As the fleet caught the breeze line out of Cascais and cruised, spray flying over the horizon, life onboard will now be starting to settle back into watch systems and sail changes and for some (and certainly for some livers!) it will feel rather nice to be back at sea.
The gentle start to this long race will certainly be welcomed by those onboard who suffered from seasickness at the beginning of Race 1, as the body has slightly more of a chance to settle into life on the ocean and for most this means that they will not be affected by ‘Mal de Mer’.

For the race office team, once the fleet has left port it is time to pack up the office and move thoughts onto the race ahead and to the next stopover. It is always satisfying seeing that last mast disappear over the horizon having started a new race, but during those first hours of the race there is a tendency to keep glancing up to check that no one is coming back to port. For the reindexing race team in Cascais yesterday afternoon this happened all too soon with Victoria B.C. Clipper returning to Cascais at approximately 1530 UTC.
due to the failure of a bolt in their steering cable system.
Skipper Ewan made the decision that the best course of action would be to turn back to replace the bolt and was able to do so safely using their back up steering system. Once in Cascais the appropriate repairs were made and Victoria left Cascais to return to the race at 0250 UTC with a fully functioning steering system. The race committee will make any decisions concerning redress in due course.
Due to Victorias return and flight times leaving Portugal this morning the position reports will be uploaded late today.
