Leg one of the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race
In a brisk 12 knot offshore breeze and glorious sunshine, the 10 boat Clipper fleet surged across the start line at 1630 local time (1930 GMT) this evening. Jersey was the first to cross, closely followed by Durban, Westernaustralia, New York, Cardiff, Singapore, Qingdao, Liverpool, Victoria and Glasgow. It was a good clean start with the yachts close reaching at about 9-10 knots. They were last seen disappearing off to the south, making good speed towards Durban, some four and a half thousand miles away.

Back at CENAB the dock is empty, but the bustle continues. What we have come to think of as Clipper HQ over the past ten days is now already turning into the reception base for the Mini-Transat Race whose first boat is expected in sometime tomorrow night, so yet another all night vigil for Dominique and his staff. As I have probably said before, yacht races always seem to end at night. The difference here however is that there is currently over 1000 miles between first and last.
The first position report will be after the 0400 GMT radio sched, so by the time we receive the positions, plot them, calculate the distances and so on (all at 2 oclock in the morning Salvador time) UK based supporters should be able to digest the first few hours performance with their morning cornflakes.
